It is all about open -

[This is] the biggest day for Internet from Tim Berners-Lee decided to give the World Wide Web to the masses. .. This means more people can use cloud services using multiple devices more ... [Citrix contributing CloudStack to Apache is] massif. And it could be a very crucial moment in the history of the Internet. In a word: cloud just gone mainstream. ( British Telecom )

Wow. These are some of the many words of support for our announcement earlier this week that we have received from our industry partners. It is both exciting and rewarding to see so much support for our movement, and there are plenty of fodder in the blogosphere, Twittersphere and the press. However, I've noticed a few trends in misperceptions over the past two days and I want to clarify a few things:

  1. OpenStack did not lose for CloudStack win - We do not offer an "either / or" choice here - it should be considered ". and" the opportunity for anyone to build a cloud We encourage fully allows you to download both products and get engaged in respective communities to determine what works best for your needs. Citrix does not consider this as zero sum, and we do not want OpenStack die. in fact, we will continue to contribute and cross-pollination of the OpenStack project in our commercial product . the main objective for submitting CloudStack to the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is ready to reach a viable platform generation open source cloud for our customers, as well as the opportunity to work with some of the major projects open source cloud in the market as Hadoop, Cassandra and Tomcat.
  2. is about, they're really just adding Proprietary vs. Open suppliers-If as VMware talk a good game on the cloud a similar management to a shim cloud into their existing product virtualization own data center. CloudStack, on the other hand, it is designed for the cloud and its customers have already successfully deployed over 100 commercial clouds using open source. Not only pilots and experiments. Customers who have deployed on CloudStack are collectively generate a staggering $ 1 billion in cloud revenue today for some of the largest brands in the world. No one else even comes close. Not to mention that the technologies under the ASF are proven, thus: the massive accumulation of the cloud infrastructure held today headed by technologies that were first proven to scale in large clouds production as Facebook, Netflix and Google - and then made available to customers of all sizes available under an Apache open source license. This is the first time in the history of open source software is the industry leader and we want to take this opportunity by working with ASF, while continuing to work with OpenStack, to establish a common platform open source cloud.
  3. The cloud is now - He 10s are of CloudStack servers 1000s in production today, fueling almost every imaginable type of cloud. Every day, these CloudStack clouds are growing, and new ones are coming online. While some customers may have the time to sit on the sidelines waiting for the buildout other platforms mature, we believe that those who want to start now deserved a true open platform to build today.

Needless to say, I am happy to see where this will go in 2012. Be sure to join us at our next Synergy 2012 conference in May when Citrix CEO Mark Templeton and I explore the future of cloud even further during the keynotes. The cloud has evolved in the world of technology for a long time -. But as we said above BT partner, it is now gone mainstream
