As usual in the world of technology, the year is to get busy with the beginning CES in January 10 show promises this year to present a great number of new devices that can be used for work and play. in fact, I see forecasts of key technology publications saying 2012 will be "the year of the ultrabook" (eg, the MacBook Air). This m made think about the results of our survey in late 2011 countdown, which has asked every day how people work (or not) during the holidays. over 55% of respondents told us that they would workshifting (moving work to a more optimal location - usually outside the office). and their employers supported the year Not only that, but over 50% of respondents said they would use a tablet or a smartphone to check with work while on vacation, against only 21% who would use laptops. Moreover, when asked what type of applications they are using more during the season, a huge 93% said they would be using applications that help them work - only about half of this percentage said they would use applications for shopping or gaming.
So what do these statistics tell us? With the rising popularity super lightweight ultrabooks, it seems the perfect storm for increased Workshifting (and in turn, productivity) in 2012. Not only can we continue to use our smartphone or tablet to work on the go, but with laptops more convenient to carry with us, it will be even easier to get heavy lifting work done anywhere at any time. You've probably heard about our CEO Mark Templeton refer to a food analogy to talk about the way we use each device differently. We can use our smartphone to "snack" on information - perhaps catch up on the news or e-mail industry. A tablet allows us to delve into some more and "dine" - say the creation and editing of documents. While a laptop (or now, ultrabooks) allow us to really "cook" and create complex spreadsheets, analyze data, etc. Like the kitchen, everyone has preferences and "recipes" for success.
But how access to work that people want? For that matter, I will again refer to our recent survey - when asked how connected they would be on vacation during the holidays, 57% said they will check email several times a day. A hard core of 27% said they will check in every 30-60 minutes, while only 5% said they would not come at all. And those who received or purchased a new device during December, 84% said they would use for business and personal use. Perhaps my favorite question asked how often people used their smartphone or tablet to answer a question on the holiday dinner table. I can assure you the family values of our country are not in danger, 44% said they do not use them at all!
These results (see here) tell me that what I suspected was correct in December - the freedom to work from wherever and whenever you find inspiration can help relieve stress, increase productivity and give us more quality time to spend with our families. Keep an eye on Citrix in 2012 for more innovation in virtualization and the cloud will help us to further balance our personal and professional lives!
