Major HDX enhancements in Citrix Receiver for Linux 12.0 -

Citrix Receiver for Linux 12.0 offers exciting enhancements that offer HDX high definition user experience, better server scalability and efficiency class of higher bandwidth. Linux Receiver 12.0 aligns with XenDesktop 5.5 and XenApp 6.5, announced in August This version has been incubating for a long time (thank you to all those who provided comments on May Tech Preview!) And we are very pleased to enable our customers and partners get their hands on it.

Here are some of the main features of this version:

HDX MediaStream flash Redirection: flash Redirection single Citrix technology allows end users to play back high definition video and other Adobe flash content, while reducing bandwidth requirements and improve server scalability. We do this by leveraging the intelligence in the end user's device and play Flash content locally rather than on the server. This allows us to provide a significant performance improvement over competing technologies.

This release introduces our Flash Redirection technology on 32-bit Ubuntu and Fedora and the x86 platforms, and we are actively pursuing avenues to support other popular Linux distributions and platforms in the near future

advanced support HDX 3D Pro :. Linux receiver 12.0 introduces advanced support for Pro, our industry-leading solution to provide 3D high-end professional XenDesktop 5.5 HDX 3D graphics (see recent blog Derek Thorslund).

  • Support for specialized HDX 3D Pro codecs: HDX 3D Pro provides a deep compression to limited bandwidth WAN connections through a codec based on the GPU, and Linux Receiver 12.0 is capable of decoding data compressed deeply on either the CPU of the user device (minimum 2 GHz) or, where applicable, on the GPU. The benefit of the end user is a rich experience for professional graphics users with low bandwidth consumption
  • Multi-Monitor Suppo rt :. Pro ISN HDX 3D 't just for remote access; with multi-monitor support, it is also an excellent solution for replacement graphics workstation, to centralize processing 3D graphics in the data center. With this feature, users now have the freedom to not only use multiple monitors also organize in all configurations and mix-n-match them with the different resolutions and orientations.

The HDX 3D Pro features are available on x86 platforms

HDX RealTime Webcam Video Compression :. Before the intro uction of this technology, we have provided the generic USB redirection as a mechanism to support cameras for Unified Communications applications. While the technology worked well in LAN, it did not sit well in WAN environments and in difficult network conditions. With the introduction of Webcam Video Compression, we now compresses the webcam video before sending it to the server. This results in dramatic improvements in data traffic and provides a better user experience in LAN and WAN environments.

Our tests for this popular feature-based unified communications clients such as Skype, Microsoft Lync and our own GoToMeeting HDFaces. We believe that our generic solution is extensible through a wide array of unified communications clients and expect to add to the list over time

VoIP Support :. For VoIP applications, we have made significant reductions audio latency and improved resilience for longer calls

audio Support from several sources :. With the introduction of ALSA sound subsystem, we now support audio from multiple sources. With this enhancement, a user can, for example, to hear the ringing of an incoming call while watching a webcast by using the USB Headset

Password Expiration Support :. Before the introduction of this feature, on the expiry of their Directory password active users have to connect to their virtual desktop and change their password using the Windows interface. With this change, users are prompted to change their password expiration on the Linux client itself

Win7 VDA Smartcard Support :. With this feature, we allow now card authentication chip on virtual desktops running Windows 7.

Please download the latest Linux Receiver here and let us know what you think. The administration documentation can be found here. We think you will see that the improvements of this version make the Linux receiver an ideal solution for the replacement of office knowledge workers.

Thanks,

Ankur Shah, principal product manager for HDX
