It is rare that perceptions are worse than the marketing realities. I'm generally a "glass half empty" kind of guy, and while I was very happy to join Citrix, I expected heavy lifting to help build momentum in the cloud space. After a few weeks in my new role, I can say that I am pleasantly surprised (shocked damn close) to the footprint and the momentum Citrix in major operational cloud environments, especially with their open source platform products, Xen / XenServer and CloudStack.
Having recently come from a start-up open source, I understand the leverage of the massive market that open source can provide trying to disrupt the market leaders. in fact, it is the main reason why I joined Citrix. communities and open source technologies are really provide the foundation for cloud computing and I felt that having a cloud-ready hypervisor (Xen / XenServer) and IaaS platform (CloudStack) which are open source creates a significant opportunity to propel Citrix into a leadership position in cloud computing.
I have since discovered is that Citrix is already in this position of leadership and they just forgot to tell anyone. While the industry has focused on the dynamics of the marketing of new alliances (OpenStack and OVA), Citrix has successfully occupied the close of business in a competitive race against VMware. How did they do it? Build and manage large communities of users and developers and to offer continuous innovation in products that remove lock suppliers at significantly lower prices.
I guess now all we have to do is standing wave our arms and shout from the rooftops. Here are some statistics that I was surprised to learn:
Xen / XenServer
========================
10+ million users
larger clouds Powers (Amazon, Rackspace, GoGrid and more)
# 1 Open Source Hypervisor
# 2 Market leader in server virtualization
Named Gartner server Virtualization market leader
20+ certified partners worldwide
1000+ certified cloud applications ready
CloudStack
============== ===========
Powers over $ 1 billion in cloud services
Used to build the biggest clouds (Zynga, Tata Communications, GoDaddy ...)
27,000+ active community members
1000 running CloudStack cloud
adding more clouds 100 per month
Add to that the scale of the Citrix field crew resource marketing, channel footprint worldwide and the basic strategic partner ... and ... Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a winner!
I'm happy to be on the team and we look forward to accelerating the success of open source Citrix portfolio.
