Synergy One More Thing: Citrix Receiver for Facebook -

When Synergy conference in Barcelona last week, Citrix showed a demo mandatory "one more thing" at the end of the Keynote opening. This time he was Citrix Receiver running within Facebook, using an HTML5-based engine to connect back to the corporate data center and run Windows applications inside Facebook.

For those who do not see it, here's a link to the extract on Citrix TV.

How have we done, why do we do, and more importantly which should take you far from it.

As for the "how" it was relatively simple. Our web-based receiver has been designed to be easy to extend and integrate - for this demo we have enabled support for the receiver performance in an iframe and used the Facebook API to wire these together. Initially we renamed Receiver to give it a look and feel facebook (Receiver for Web supports rebranding simply by css), but during the opening march through, we decided to withdraw from it to avoid confusion about where Facebook has ended and the receiver started.

then, how do we reconnect to our XenApp? For this, we used our "engine HDX HTML5. Receiver for Web HDX engine typically uses a "native" - for example, specifically written for Windows or Mac. These give the best user experience, and can provide access to local devices such as webcam or customer drives. However, compromise is the need to download an engine installation. It is not always possible, and if that is the case, our plan is to leverage the growing power of browsers to run HTML5 / JavaScript code.

Currently we ship HTML5 engine for use with ChromeOS (search "Citrix Receiver" in the ChromeOS store) and internal test this on a number of other browsers. For the Facebook demo, we decided to use it to illustrate the "zero install appropriate case for such use cases -. If a native receiver would work as well

(It is interesting to note that we deliberately used a private in the rear end closes LAN server to prevent our being swamped by conference delegates trying the demo themselves - so if you have tried and failed, that's why)

the final piece is unique. to log in. We have demonstrated the synergy of last year that our authentication framework is open to bring your own identity systems

http://www.citrix.com/tv/#videos/2886 ~ 2min 20 seconds -. 6 min 50 seconds.

'incoming' identity federation today like this is really the prerogative of a few Citrix experts - but we are productizing this in the future. For the outgoing identity federation (ie you use domain credentials to access applications that require other credentials, take a look at Gateway Enterprise Cloud).

Finally, the biggest question. "Why". Really there are three things to take

  1. Think next to the box. People work in different ways, and while Facebook can not be a normal working space for many of us - for some people it is where they spend their lives. Appealing to new workers, especially young people, means looking at different approaches. Facebook may or may not be appropriate for your users - but it is a great illustration of what is possible
  2. If we can integrate with Facebook, you can integrate your portal .. Keynote demos are really put together quickly on the basis of the core technology we have built within our current products and future. Receiver Adding a portal is not a big project.
  3. The identity federation will be huge. You need control over user groups and policies to which users are in which groups and groups can access which applications -. But that does not mean you necessarily address connection or provision accounts manually

In 1800 employers often bore the cost of employees with houses. In recent years more we saw the same trend with cars, phones and laptops - but today many employees prefer to provide their own. This gives the choice of employees and frees their employers the cost and complexity of simultaneous execution of a real estate agency, car dealer, exchange and electronics superstore phone (probably as well as their "core business"). Perhaps "identity" will be the same way. Providers such as Google and Facebook allow me to choose an identity and access experience that suits me - but is also perfectly suited to meet the relatively modest needs of my business

This demo was very well a point rather than talk. a prediction of the future - but there are convincing arguments for such a future - and it is worth considering whether your company or the industry would benefit from such an approach
