What Citrix, Eli Lilly, Twitter and the Department of Motor Vehicles have in common?
No, it is not set up for a joke! These companies, along with several other standout organizations, presented at the first annual consumerization of IT in the company IDG (CITE) Conference and Expo in San Francisco last week. They explained how the phenomenon of consumerization has affected all organizations - pharmaceutical products for government, hot startups to multibillion dollar companies in Silicon Valley and around the world
I am delighted to being in this event because ,. as many of you know, I am passionate about the consumerization of the impact IT is having on our industry. In fact, it is in the DNA of Citrix.
Our CEO Mark Templeton keynoted at ISCED Tuesday when he described his early efforts to "consumerize" Citrix organization. There are nearly three years, Mark had the idea so radical to give employees the option to bring their own personal devices in the workplace. He had the ordinary sense for a variety of reasons, to stimulate the satisfaction and productivity of people to reduce the responsibility of managing devices. Mark went to our CIO in order to board about 20 percent of the company to our BYO program. In fact, in three years, nearly 25 percent of employees chose to bring their own computer to work. Of course, this does not include the number of smartphones, tablets and other personal devices we use have become a part of our daily work life as well.
When introduced in late 09, the concept of BYO and our pilot program was revolutionary. Citrix and learned a lot during those years of training, in particular on freedom, flexibility, security and control. This experience influenced indelibly our thinking, our design and our strategy in Citrix products across the organization.
Today, BYO is to the forefront of the conversation "what's next in the company." And while we would like to take the credit for her single (:-), this phenomenon is likely the result of the transition from the world of the PC era in the cloud era.
What does this mean? Now more than ever, people expect mobility. They expect the choice. They expect self-service. Not only in their personal lives, but in the workplace, too. They expect the freedom to work and play. They expect to have the same type of high-end experience within their business as they do when listening to iTunes, streaming videos on Netflix, or even flying on Virgin America. user experience matters!
As Mark said, until recently, IT companies have welcomed the personal request of their CEO for an iPad or another hot device as an "exception" isolated the rules and protocols standard computer. There was no justification for the IT realignment around these isolated incidents. But today, when the exception is the rule and suddenly 50 percent or more of your business is demanding the same service ... IT must support, not stop this phenomenon.
There is a solution. Mark explained the mentality of radical change that must take place in the way companies approach IT architecture. The new rules include the independence of the unit, wireless networks, self-service display cases, and the convergence of public and private clouds in what Mark describes as "computer worldwide," offering flexibility, ubiquity and security.
Although change can be scary, it is constant. and those who embrace change and work to build a modern workplace will see incredible results. All less expensive infrastructure, for improved disaster preparedness, increased employee retention and improving facilities management.
Mark concluded his speech by reiterating how this transformation is the engine Citrix forward in our mission to support mobile workstyles and cloud services. and I remain qUOTE IDG event inspired not only with what Citrix has done, but also by other innovative companies across the spectrum that create solutions to meet today's needs for mobility, self-service and the independence of the unit.
Although Citrix was this game consumerization several years, we know that we are just at the dawn of a greater, broader transformation that is changing the industry forever. We will never return to the old rules - computer before exceptions are now the assumptions of today
