Events and alarms: building blocks for a robust networking

Events and alarms: building blocks for a robust networking -

Amid increasingly peripheral network deployments, the need for ease of management well defined and a monitoring system has been existing for some of it's time. To meet this need a network management system, the Simple Network Management Protocol was incorporated and defined by the IETF.

SNMP is based on a model consisting of an SNMP manager, SNMP agent, SNMP and management information database managed. An SNMP agent sets the device management data managed as variables to the SNMP manager.

Now let's examine the NetScaler ADC. The SNMP agent on NetScaler ADC generates asynchronous notification of events called traps. NetScaler generates corresponding interrupt message whenever certain events occur.

The device NetScaler provides a set of state entities called SNMP alarms. When one of the alarm conditions are met, the NetScaler generates SNMP trap messages that are sent to the configured SNMP manager.

Command Center is a manageability and monitoring solution well composed offered by Citrix. It can manage all Citrix networking devices like NetScaler ADC, repeater devices, AGED, Bridge Cloud and SDX.

When Command Center (CC) is configured as an SNMP manager, the device managed as NetScaler ADC, the generated traps roads, the Command Center server. Every single trap routed CC is registered as an individual event in the Command Center server. CC stores this event for six months and only displays the last 10,000 events.

Every time a trap is received at the command center and the event, an alarm is generated. To understand this better, consider an example. Say, Command Center becomes a trap for an Entity class down to the vip123 virtual server on the device NetScaler 10.102.60.5.

An event and an alarm will be generated for the virtual server with vip123 category Down under Entity 10.102.60.5 device. Next vip123 time trap Unit downward is received by the control center of 10.102.60.5 device, a special event will be generated. But under the alarms, only the alarm previously generated will be updated with the latest retail vip123. At the same time, the alarm will keep the events previously received under vip123 that history.

In this way, you will always find more events for a specific device alarms. Both alarms and events are associated with a default severity level.

Now this alarm / event boils down to what these alarms notify the Command Center administrator. Based on the default traps severity levels, the administrator will be notified if it is a critical, major, minor, warning, info or alarm clear.

If an alarm Entity down is generated, it is deleted when corresponding Entity up trap is received at the CC server. If a trap Entity down is not generated for 24 hours, the alarm light will be removed from the system.

For all these alarms, depending on your specific criteria, you can also create an email notification system by creating an alarm trigger.

With Events, alarms and alarm triggers, the control center has a robust manageability and monitoring solution that gives the right to notification at the right time to the right person!

XenDesktop and Provisioning Services on vSphere 5

XenDesktop and Provisioning Services on vSphere 5 -

I want to preface this post by saying that if you're not interested in just a backstory jump to the synthesis section for a summary ...

Coming from a consulting environment I learned the hard way that you should always check the compatibility of all components in a project. Since VMware vSphere 5 has released many people have found the hard way that Citrix Provisioning Services (PVS) was not supported on the latest platform of the VMware hypervisor. People without thorough knowledge of the battery of the Citrix solution can be read XenDesktop 5 was supported on vSphere 5, but in reality, that meant when using machines Creation Services (MCS). This forces companies to have to make difficult decisions. You can either go in the direction of the use of MCS with vSphere 5, or go with Provisioning Services on vSphere 4.x Hopefully most of the clients consulted with their Citrix trusted adviser before making this decision. Even as recently as a few weeks ago, the lines were blurred when it came to the help of PVS with vSphere 5. One of my clients was having problems with PVS on vSphere 5 for nearly two months. There are two flat months Citrix does not support this configuration. Citrix Technical Support will generally give a better effort to help in these situations, but at the end of the recommendation is made to return to vSphere 4.x. Unfortunately, returning to vSphere 4.x was not an option for my particular client because there were many hours of work put to build their infrastructure vSphere 5 and they had a deadline closing in fast food to start their desktop virtualization pilot. I just started working with the client it a few weeks ago and did not know all the pain they had been having with Provisioning Services on vSphere 5. In a last effort of the PM for the project reached my ERM (Enterprise Resource Manager) and asked if there was anything they could do to get PVS to work before the end of the week, otherwise they would have to remove the driver. In theory, they could have used MCS for XenDesktop and XenApp servers provisioned manually for the pilot. The problem is a government client, and architecture approved and all pre-implementation documents was built on the principle of PVS. Essentially, they would have to start over, and this was not an option. When my ERM sent me the request of the client using that I was afraid the driver would fail because of PVS will not be supported on vSphere 5, but I wanted to do everything I can to help. The issue of customer saw was when starting several target devices to a vDisk in Standard mode, they would simply hang a black screen with white. I saw this question on a previous project I worked before coming to work for Citrix, and at the end we had to resort to using MCS. I started digging around to try to find all the updates on issues related to PVS on vSphere 5, and I quickly learned that we were able to hit the jackpot!

About a week before jumping to help this client I remembered Provisioning Services 6.1 is out, so the first thing I checked was if Citrix eDocs ESXi 5 had added to the list of supported hypervisors for PVS 6.1. I am disappointed that only ESX 4.1 was listed as supported, and even as I write this post ESXi 5.x is still not listed (see here). Then I started searching the Citrix forums, who pointed me in the direction of this article Citrix KB that was just updated March 26, 2012 on how to obtain PVS 5.6 / 6.0 work on vSphere 5! While on a GoToMeeting with the customer that I had to pull up the article and they quickly said they had tried this resolution a few days before with no luck. Before going, I was walking through the article with them and we double checked everything was set correctly. The PVS server boot file has "Interrupt safe mode (check if the device freezes at startup)" as the resolution of the article said, but the issue was still ongoing.

Figure 1

Many people, including myself sometimes will go to the "Resolution" KB without reading all the "transmit section" section. in this case, the kb article above indicates that only the VMXNET3 virtual network card is supported, not E1000 most commonly used virtual NIC. When checking the target devices and PVS parameters of the virtual machine I noticed that they were still using E1000 virtual NIC. the mentioned technical support Citrix client told them in a previous call not VMXNET3 use because it has not been stable, with PVS. in fact, it was fairly well known in the world of consulting that caused problems with PVS VMXNET3 so we usually used E1000 NIC. Here are a couple of people older KB discuss the matter with VMXNET3, CTX1280 and CTX125361. at this point, I had the customer to modify the parameters of the virtual network adapter on the two target devices and virtual servers to use PVS VMXNET3. Next, we define the vDisk in standard mode, and started several target devices. Here is! The vDisk was broadcast without problem on vSphere 5 !!

Abstract:

Many clients running Provisioning Services on vSphere 5 were to see them hang target devices at a time of the black screen booting in a vDisk standard mode. On top of that Citrix does not support running Provisioning Services on vSphere 5 that people had to change their architecture or use MCS on vSphere 5, or Provisioning Services on vSphere 4.x The good news is Citrix now officially supports running procurement services on vSphere 5.x (ESXi 5.x)! The caveat to this, you must use the virtual NIC VMXNET3 vSphere on your target devices. If you use Virtual Server Provisioning you must also use virtual NICs vmxnet3 on VM. The last thing to be done is to configure the Provisioning Server bootstrap file for "Interrupt safe mode" as shown above in Figure 1. I also recommend the implementation ESXi 5 Update 1 in the referenced article below in the third chip. ESXi 5 Update 1 resolved a similar problem with Provisioning Services on vSphere 5.

References:

  • vSphere 5 Support Provisioning Server 5.6.x and 6.0 (I can confirm this article also applies to PVS 6.1 as well)
  • XenDesktop hypervisor Citrix product support - this is a helpful matrix product edition that clearly indicates that hypervisors are supported by the different versions of XenDesktop and Provisioning services.
  • another important article was published by VMware regarding a separate issue with vSphere 5 and Citrix Provisioning Services. Essentially, the article says ESXi 5 Update 1 fixes the problem mentioned in the article.

XenDesktop 4 Scripting and cache

XenDesktop 4 Scripting and cache - localhost

I recently worked with a client who suffered a service outage IMA in their XenDesktop 4 farm. The troubleshooting process taught me many things about XenDesktop, and wanted to share our results for the benefit of others XenDesktop 4 customers.

Customer Environment

This customer has a XenDesktop deployment of medium size. The customer's environment is

  • VMware vSphere 4 DDCs accommodation and ADV
  • DDCs are Windows Server 03, all 32-bit
  • XenDesktop 4 SP1, the customer had deployed patches released until June 2011
  • Approximately 1,500 virtual desktops Windows XP SP3 with a slightly older version of VDA in use
  • static virtual desktops (not usage by customers)
  • the SDC roles are divided according to our best practices which I have blogged in the past:
    • agricultural dedicated master server (maxworkers = 0, the highest electoral preference)
    • master server backup firm dedicated, which is also the primary XML broker (maxworkers = 0, second electoral preference)
    • 4 "brokerage" DDCs (maxworkers not settled, the preference of the election by default)

Service Without

there

Several weeks, the customer has suffered a failure IMA service on the master server farm. This has caused disruption to the operation of the farm, and prevent new desktop sessions from being established.

The roles being implemented by the master server farm would have failed on the master server to the backup farm. However, this has not occurred. Naturally, the efforts of customer-focused catering service so that diagnostic information was not captured at the time. To understand why the role of master of the farm has not missed more we used the CDF control to capture traces across a number of DDCs in the farm. These traces have shown us a line by line description of each IMA event and message, and gave us a good understanding of the behavior of the farm at the time of the failure of the IMA service was held.

When we began examining the master server farm we could find no clue as to why service failure occurred. The customer, of course wanted to know the cause in order to avoid a recurrence of the problem.

We have set up a process so that if the problem occurred again, we could capture enough diagnostic information to find the root cause. The process was:

  • Log onto the master server farm and start a CDF Trace using all the modules
  • Take note, or taking screenshots / videos any behavior that you can see ,. for example by double vCentre commands, other errors, etc.
  • Stop the CDF trace after 5 minutes.
  • Excerpt system and SDC newspaper applications.
  • Save the CDF trace, event logs and screen shots or other evidence to support off the DDC for later download Citrix for analysis.
  • using the vSphere client, suspend the master server farm.
  • Use Veam FastSCP, WinSCP or vSphere Client (or your tool of choice) to extract the VMSS file outside the VMFS datastore. Zip the file for download later to Citrix for analysis.
  • Power VM back on and allow it to resume from suspend.
  • Perform a clean restart of the master server in the farm, using the restart of the operating control system (not a forced shutdown).
  • Of course, if the virtual machine does not restart, then you'll need to force a reboot.
  • Download the file VMSS, the CDF Trace, event logs and any other information using our FTP service.

While the client set up this process, we have continued to look for clues as to why the service failed originally.

As discussed specific steps the customer has taken to restore service, it appeared they had arrested the IMA Service, and use the command "dsmaint recreatelhc" to refresh the host cache local, the always reliable assumption that corrupt LHC could have caused the failure. In this case, it has no catering service; the customer had to restart the master server farm.

Of course, when this is done, the previous LHC is saved as .bak file. We watched the .bak file and saw that he was 2 Go!

2GB local host cache

What could explain such a large cache local host? One of our Escalation engineers suggested to check for any use of scripts in the environment.

A quick call with the customer determined that they ran scripts on the environment throughout the early morning and throughout the day. The customer has observed the LHC file while the scripts executed, and even shows an increase in file size.

A limitation of the JET database format (commonly known as Access databases for its extension .mdb file) is a maximum size of 2GB. There is a very good article on the format JET database on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Jet_Database_Engine)

We actually had aa identified specific problems with an earlier version of the SDK which caused a sharp scripting growth of the LHC, see here for the latest SDK that includes the fix: http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX127167. In this case, my client was already using the latest version of the SDK in their environment.

Drawing and measuring the problem

to prove the amount of data written to the LHC Escalation Engineer investigation the problem asked the customer to capture a CDF track while the scripts were executed. We limited the CDF control to only capture data being written in the local host cache.

The traces were analyzed and found that the script was written data on each line in the local host cache that referenced virtual desktops. Execution of simple mathematics, Escalation Engineer believes that the LHC would increase by about 56 MB per day due to client scripts.

And of course, we must remember to XenDesktop administrators and other administrative changes and agricultural general behavior would also increase the size of the LHC.

Conclusion

We provided our findings to the client and informed that our SDK cmdlets and the LHC has been operating as intended; there was no specific bug in XenDesktop cause this behavior.

The customer has implemented regular maintenance to recreate the local host cache and thus restore the size while considering other options.

We suggested they review their design and implementation scripts. In particular, we recommended to the automated monitoring of the size of the local host cache so that if she pushes the limit of 2 GB, it will trigger an alert to the support team.

now, for -the-scenes delay it took to make that happen. Since the acquisition of Kaviza in late May, our team worked feverishly with Citrix extended teams to build and deliver this version. The single user interface effort is significant - we have completely revised and updated the management interface, usability testing to ensure we provide the simplest experience for Windows® administrators to configure and manage virtual desktops. This looks to take off all the skin of a patient and put on the skin of the new brand, and connecting all the nerve endings and muscles back together to operate fully. We are excited to bring this new release for you, and we hope you will find valuable new improvements

Synergy keynote - wow -

For those of you follow me on Twitter, you would have seen that there were so covered that even my typing speed could barely keep up! And despite assertions Mike English, I promise that everything was written on-the-go 😉 Catch here - http://twitter.com/#!/LouiseMatthews

I should start by saving I know I'm totally biased, but ... WOW. What an honor! Mark was on form at the top, we had a wave of amazing announcements and, of course, welcome our friends to App-DNA into the fold. So while I can be forgiven for being a little excitable about all this, fortunately, many of our customers and partners were equally furious. I spent lunch talking to customers, partners, blogger and his colleagues and the atmosphere is fantastic. We talk about wow to do with the desktop processing, well - it was just wow

Richard Armstrong at Belron, who I sit with, was equally enthusiastic about both the delivery of Mark and content while Adrian Foxall! , Director of the company Cisco UCS Computacenter, sent me to say how impressed he was by the passion, the energy of Mark and technology, we have demonstrated.

I would be really interested in your comments on the speech?

My Synergy Diary - Summit Day 1 -

I am here in Barcelona this week to attend any Summit and Synergy. So I decided to keep a diary of my time here, so I can share my experiences of the sessions I attended and people I meet.

Day 1 of the Summit began on Monday, I had a busy morning preparing for the session usability tools as a service (TAA) and cabins for TAA and accelerator of success.

Summit speech took place at 14 o'clock I arrived late due to a meeting with the Citrix CTPs where we were the TAAS promotion and collecting feedback.

There were some very interesting announcements at the keynote, all that will be revealed during the keynote Synergy Wednesday morning.

Later in the afternoon we continued with usability studies collection excellent and very positive feedback from partners.

That night some of the TAAS team went out to dinner at the local conference center before returning to the hotel for a sleep need :-)

I also took many pictures during the event you can find on the Citrix Support site Facebook.
