Cisco has recently published a Cisco Validated Design guide updated (CVD) for its Cisco Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI) with Citrix XenDesktop. It is available here and provides full coverage of the entire Cisco VXI solution to provide virtual desktops with XenDesktop - so I would strongly recommend anyone interested to give it a read
In this blog, I would give the key. presentation of a summary of the VXI solution as mentioned in cardiovascular disease, and as regards the implementation of XenDesktop. On a high level, Cisco VXI is an end-to-end architecture initiative involving Cisco Data Center Collaboration and networking components allowing delivery of XenDesktop virtual desktops based - with a focus on achieving better scalability using Cisco components in the data center, achieve better collaboration by integrating voice and video applications and Cisco communications terminals for workstations virtual and finally to use Cisco networks to provide optimized workstations. By leveraging the VXI solution, an implementation of XenDesktop is further authorized to issue media rich virtual desktop with the performance of the exceptional end user. Let's see how this is achieved by breaking down the VXI components and the benefits it brings to XenDesktop:
1. Data Center. I'm sure most are aware of the Cisco Unified Communications Systems (UCS) and the innovations it brings to the architecture of the blade and the unique benefits it offers to host XenDesktop. I will name a few here:
- high speed UCS implementation of the expanded memory offers high density of virtual machines without compromising end-user performance
- Unified Fabric (FCoE) with high I / O bandwidth allows. the scalability of the much higher overall solution. . And even in terms of virtualizing Citrix Provisioning Services components such as
- UCS Service Profile corresponds to the set of "stateless" solution, which could be a great advantage for managing larger environments, with faster and more dynamic provisioning and also faster recovery.
If you are interested in more details for XenDesktop on UCS solution, here is the link to all three CVD UCS for XenDesktop (one for each hypervisor). It also provides the architecture validated reference design recommendations and density numbers for XenDesktop and XenApp on UCS.
side of the data center, VXI CVD also provides the best hypervisor and storage design practices as well as references to the results of tests conducted with Atlantis ILIO for IOPS reductions. So a highly scalable backend infrastructure to host XenDesktop. Then look at the piece of collaboration:
2. Collaboration. I like breaking the VXI together into two subcomponents: Endpoints and Applications enabling rich media simultaneously, voice and video integration to provide workstations virtual. Here is a list of Cisco Virtual Experience (VXC) Endpoints and a brief list of features:
VXC Endpoint | Class | Feature Select |
Cisco Cius | Tablet | - Citrix Receiver Enterprise ready.- ready with central management through Cisco Unified Communications Manager (Cisco UCM). -. Multiple ways to install applications (Android Market Store, UCM managed Cisco App HQ) -. Standalone and docked fashion - local voice and video media plan - Direct support path direction to the destination (indeed "hairpin"). |
VXC-2112 and VXC-2212 | Zero customer | - Supports ICA / HDX connection.- Supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) and PoE Universal. -. Seamless integration with Cisco IP phones (9971, 9951, 8961) -. Cisco Unified Personal Communicator (CCPS) integration |
VXC -6215 | unified communications (UC) enabled thin client | - Taking support ICA / HDX integration CUPC connection.-. - Media Termination: Terminate voice stream media on the local client when controlled by CUPC or CUPC for MS Lync running in the virtual desktop |
VXC-4000 | UC enabled software appliance | - Citrix Receiver is installed on the thick client from VXC 4000 is a software appliance and do not provide the ability to connect XenDesktop in the software. -. Termination Medial |
With endpoints VXC Cisco Unified Communications Applications are essential to enable better collaboration appearance media XenDesktop. The ability to implement Cisco Unified Personal Communicator (CCPS) within a virtual office with routing point to point media provides better performance for the end user. This eliminates the effect of "hairpin" - which is caused if the audio / video in the call is routed from source to destination across the data center through virtual channels. Instead with this media unloading traffic on the VXC 6215 and VXC 4000, a separation of UC media traffic and placement outside the HDX protocol takes place. This allows the press to go through the network to the QoS of the network on the original base to apply to media streams. This contributes significantly to maintain intact the virtual desktop experience while making the video calls. This demo provides a great illustration. And finally, look at the VXI network:
3. VXI Network. This covers Cisco networking solutions that enable the VXI end to end solution to deliver XenDesktop, including new services HDX aware Cisco Wide Area Application (WAAS) to provide the quality of service and on the HDX optimization WAN. This allows environments with WAAS already deployed for HDX-conscious and ready to deliver virtual desktop across the WAN connections. Obviously, Citrix Branch Repeater and Citrix NetScaler is the solution for WAN optimization and traffic management, respectively, and offer tight integration with XenDesktop. Thus, Citrix customers have choice in deploying networking solutions based on their needs.
Now, with this brief summary, I hope your reading CVD will allow you to keep things more in the context of XenDesktop. In future blogs, I will cover specific technologies and integration aspects of the common solution -. So make a comment and let me know if you have any specific interests
I find your comments to be helpful so please feel free to reach with questions and / or comments.
