10 Xen! (Part 3 of 3) -

In the first post of this series I went to install XenServer and preparation of basic virtual machine images to a XenDesktop deployment (/ blogs / 2012 / 01 / 13/10 to xen-part-1-of-3 /). In the second post, I covered the existing XenDesktop deployment site itself (/ blogs / 2012/01/18/10 to xen-part-2-of-3 /). If you have not read either of these previous posts, I suggest you do to get some context before continuing here.

For this last post in the series we'll take a look at the application delivery XenApp our virtual desktop environment. After all, as has been discussed many times in the past, desktop computers provide the basic platform for our users, but they are real applications that allow them to get things done and be productive.

I will start by spinning a new virtual machine as follows from my base model:

XA - Windows Server 08 R2 XenApp Server and components (4GB RAM + 4 vCPUs)

I started XenApp 6.5 installer and selected key XenApp and Web Interface components. After installation and a reboot (about 10 minutes) I used the XenApp Server Role Manager to create a new battery with a local SQL Server Express database, and restarted again (it took just under 10 minutes). As I did for the XenDesktop components, I will do everything for XenApp on a system with both the option to expand to multiple servers and an external database later.

With the now established farm, I published Notepad to test and configure both a XenApp Web and XenApp Services Site. I then tested the connection from a client computer through the Web browser before updating the Win7Base image with Citrix Receiver and address of the XenApp Services site. Updating existing virtual desktops was made through the catalog of the machine in Desktop Studio.

The basic XenApp functionality is in place and I am ready to implement an application delivery strategy. I must begin by asking the following questions :?

- Which applications will users need access to

- How should be delivered applications (installed in the virtual desktop, XenApp hosted, streamed to XenApp, streaming on the virtual desktop, streaming on endpoint Device)

- is there an existing XenApp infrastructure that we can import the setting? (If yes XenApp Migration Center / Tools can help in the process)

I also have the complete line of XenDesktop and XenApp Platinum components available to provide the best possible experience from start to finish for the users. There is virtually (no pun) unlimited options available to meet any specific requirements, although as we have seen, the initial configuration of XenDesktop XenApp environment and base may be accomplished by series of steps that are (mostly) ten minutes or less. I hope you found this series of informative blog and welcome any feedback on how you approach XenDesktop and XenApp implementations, tips, and how to set up environments as quickly and efficiently as possible.
