Cisco VXC softphone for XenDesktop shipping now -

Cisco announced the general availability of the softphone ( "software appliance") VXC 4000 for VoIP communications optimized with XenDesktop. This makes the first major Cisco Unified Communications provider to ship a softphone that uses the Citrix Virtual Channel SDK to implement an architecture that moves all media processing to the user device.

The VXC 4000 is part of Cisco Virtualization Experience Infrastructure (VXI) solution. It uses an optimized architecture that maximizes server scalability with zero degradation in audio quality. Users can point-to-point voice calls with exceptional audio clarity. VoIP traffic does not pass through the Citrix XenDesktop server at all.

This version is a highlight of the strategic alliance between Citrix and Cisco we announced in October. It offers high definition user experience without compromise for XenDesktop users on Windows 7 and Windows XP endpoints running Citrix Receiver for Windows.

Netscaler DataStream: MySQL and Last Insert Function ID

Netscaler DataStream: MySQL and Last Insert Function ID -

While troubleshooting problems with an application that has been a customer to migrate to their Netscaler (and therefore DataStream) platform. In general, the application worked well, but when you use the built-in MySQL LAST_INSERT_ID (), rather than return the value of the last inserted line, the return value is always zero. It turns out that this is a consequence of LAST_INSERT_ID being a function that uses "connection affinity". In fact, to quote the MySQL page I just linked:

"In LAST_INSERT_ID (), the most recently generated ID is maintained in the server on a person connection basis "

therefore the Netscaler acting as a proxy between the client and MySQL server (and providing all the benefits of Datastream clever as multiplex connection), the connection affinity can not be relied on. Therefore, if you call LAST_INSERT_ID separately following an insert, you get zero. Fortunately, there are other options.

By testing and confirming this behavior, I am easily able to recreate the behavior when I called the function as part of a subsequent or similar SELECT statement. However, because I was using Perl and MySQL DBI driver for my tests, I also used a shortcut method in DBI to get the last insert ID. Here are two excerpts Perl representing different methods:

 # print the stored ID DBI Last Insert my $ result = $ dbh-> LAST_INSERT_ID (undef, undef, tbl_insert_test, col1_auto); print "DBI Last Insert ID is: $ result  n"; # Use the LAST_INSERT_ID select syntax for the ID $ sth = $ dbh-> prepare ( "SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID () from tbl_insert_test '); $ Sth-> run;

The code is relatively small, I just included for completeness. The interesting part is that the DBI method worked, and returned the ID correctly every time. The SELECT statement is returned to zero, as the client had initially reported. Looking at the evidence, the mystery was solved. It turns out that the DBI programmers are (unsurprisingly) very smart and take advantage of the fact that MySQL returns the last inserted ID in the "OK" message for a successful INSERT. Therefore, no request / subsequent connection (and therefore no connection affinity) is really necessary to return the appropriate ID. See the excerpt below from a trace showing Wireshark ID in an OK response:

Insert ID in MySQL OK Response
Insert ID in MySQL OK

this not only solves our little problem with DataStream, it also saves a round trip to the database and is generally a more elegant and effective solution to the problem of obtaining the ID an INSERT. The client was happy enough to change as a result and a major obstacle in the migration was deleted.

Project Morpheus and Cisco Unified Computing System -

One of the main things I was asked during my work time Booth office processing center at Synergy Barcelona were on Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) with NetApp storage solution and the solution with the PowerEdge EqualLogic storage solution. Participants are interested in knowing what Synergy areas were running off the two solutions, why the equipment was selected and how it was configured. I will cover the Cisco UCS solution in this blog.

The relationship between Citrix, Cisco and NetApp is not new. At Citrix, we made an announcement in 2010 of our joint partnership efforts with Cisco on Cisco Desktop Virtualization Solution with Citrix XenDesktop. In addition, we have collaborated with Cisco on the desktop processing center at Synergy San Francisco. Much of the equipment that Cisco has provided Synergy San Francisco has also been used in Barcelona. However, there were some slight changes since we wanted to show the key areas of synergy as being "powered by Citrix."

Synergy Barcelona Planning began almost immediately after Synergy San Francisco, during which time discussions between the Citrix desktop transformation team and Cisco and Dell focused on what we could do differently and better than before. It was agreed to highlight the benefits of desktop virtualization by hosting positions work and applications for key user groups - including registration, access to Internet and cabin crew Our Citrix architects began designing the infrastructure, and determined the material resources needed for the construction.. material resources were based on many factors, including of vCPUs, vRAM, IOPS disk and storage to support a XenDesktop 5.5 environment using machine Creation Services.

When we presented our demands to Cisco, their engineers have determined the best equipment to conduct the Desktop Transformation solution. Accordingly, the Cisco UCS solution consisted of the following:

  • (2) Cisco UCS 5108 server chassis with (8) B250-M2 blades RAM 192GB each
  • (2) Cisco UCS 60 fabric interconnects
  • (2) NetApp FAS3240 storage systems SAN
  • (2) Shelves NetApp DS4243 disk (each with 24x 0GB drives)
  • ( 1) Cisco Nexus 5548 Ethernet 10Gps / FCoE switch

Doubling the key equipment has allowed us to build a cluster configuration for redundancy and high availability. Communication between the blades and the switch ran on 10Gb Ethernet connections. FCoE 2 x 10Gb / were used between the interconnections and FAS3240s NetApp fabric. Since Hyper-V does not support NFS we used iSCSI. The management system was processed by the Cisco UCS Manager.

Once we configured the hardware, we built six Hyper-V hosts with 6 TB of storage, since that was all we needed for virtual desktops. Virtual desktops were distributed equally among three CSVs to ensure that we would not have problems with disk latency due SCSI commands or queues. Using XenDesktop 5.5, we created MCS random Pooled desktops for Internet Access Centre, the Cisco booth, Synergy and other suppliers. This configuration provided us with the ability to rotate over 0 MCS generated virtual desktops, with the RAM being the limiting factor.

Our thanks go to Cisco and NetApp to provide the material necessary for half the desktop transformation Center, and to all our partners who helped make Synergy 2011 a great success. For more information about Cisco Unified Computing and products please visit Cisco UCS

10 Xen! (Part 3 of 3) -

In the first post of this series I went to install XenServer and preparation of basic virtual machine images to a XenDesktop deployment (/ blogs / 2012 / 01 / 13/10 to xen-part-1-of-3 /). In the second post, I covered the existing XenDesktop deployment site itself (/ blogs / 2012/01/18/10 to xen-part-2-of-3 /). If you have not read either of these previous posts, I suggest you do to get some context before continuing here.

For this last post in the series we'll take a look at the application delivery XenApp our virtual desktop environment. After all, as has been discussed many times in the past, desktop computers provide the basic platform for our users, but they are real applications that allow them to get things done and be productive.

I will start by spinning a new virtual machine as follows from my base model:

XA - Windows Server 08 R2 XenApp Server and components (4GB RAM + 4 vCPUs)

I started XenApp 6.5 installer and selected key XenApp and Web Interface components. After installation and a reboot (about 10 minutes) I used the XenApp Server Role Manager to create a new battery with a local SQL Server Express database, and restarted again (it took just under 10 minutes). As I did for the XenDesktop components, I will do everything for XenApp on a system with both the option to expand to multiple servers and an external database later.

With the now established farm, I published Notepad to test and configure both a XenApp Web and XenApp Services Site. I then tested the connection from a client computer through the Web browser before updating the Win7Base image with Citrix Receiver and address of the XenApp Services site. Updating existing virtual desktops was made through the catalog of the machine in Desktop Studio.

The basic XenApp functionality is in place and I am ready to implement an application delivery strategy. I must begin by asking the following questions :?

- Which applications will users need access to

- How should be delivered applications (installed in the virtual desktop, XenApp hosted, streamed to XenApp, streaming on the virtual desktop, streaming on endpoint Device)

- is there an existing XenApp infrastructure that we can import the setting? (If yes XenApp Migration Center / Tools can help in the process)

I also have the complete line of XenDesktop and XenApp Platinum components available to provide the best possible experience from start to finish for the users. There is virtually (no pun) unlimited options available to meet any specific requirements, although as we have seen, the initial configuration of XenDesktop XenApp environment and base may be accomplished by series of steps that are (mostly) ten minutes or less. I hope you found this series of informative blog and welcome any feedback on how you approach XenDesktop and XenApp implementations, tips, and how to set up environments as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Configuration of the receiver 3.1 on a master target device without Merchandising Server

Configuration of the receiver 3.1 on a master target device without Merchandising Server -

It has been a while since I wrote a blog on the Citrix Web site, so I thought I share this bit of info with you time to look for a similar example of "How to install and configure Receiver 3.1 for Windows manually on a master VM without Merchandising server."

I had already deployed CloudGateway StoreFront Express with my services on XenApp 6.5 server and necessary:

  • Single Sign On for CloudGateway Express my Windows 7 virtual machines
  • I also wanted to "shop" for. be set automatically for all users.
  • I also wanted the ability for users to add another store manually if needed to.
  • I do not want to use Merchandising Server in my laboratory.

so it is here:

I done the following on my master Windows 7 machine. Download CitrixReceiver.exe 3.1 for Windows from the Citrix download site (I 'uses an admin) and save it on your local disk but not yet running. You can find it here

From the command line change directory to the download location above and run the following command:

CitrixReceiver.exe / includeSSON STORE0 = " AppStore http s : // server / Citrix / StoreName / resources / v2; on; Apps on XenApp " (one line)

UPDATE! 02/02/12: Please see comment below re Ian: preferred URL for the store, which I have not tested yet, but I am assured is the preferred method for the format URL. My example above works well on the internal network, but if the end point with external receiver is or is external, tags, etc., will not work, so here is the example updated the following command:

CitrixReceiver.exe / includeSSON STORE0 = " AppStore http s : // server / Citrix / storename / discovery on; Apps on XenApp " (one line)

OK, so italic bits can be changed. AppStore is just a name, change server for the host name of your server CloudGateway Express (StoreFront server) and storename the default is "store", but change to whatever you called the store server, and the last bit is a description of the store

you can also add other stores by adding the following after the above :.

store1 = "BackUpAppStore; https: // server / Citrix / storename1 / resources / v2; on; BackUp Applications Store on XenApp"

you can also change the "on" to "off" if you want the store added but disabled for users. You can set up to 10 if you wish, but for most of us I think one or two will suffice!

However, if like me you have no certificates and you must test with HTTP and not HTTPS for your store, you must also add the following registry key after installation. (Keep in mind Citrix recommend using HTTPS or passwords will be sent in clear text, it doesnt matter to me, as this is only a test lab.)

  • HLKM Software Citrix AuthManager
  • Add SZ value "ConnectionSecurityMode" make "one"

If you also want users to be able to add more stores and manually record their passwords and change the core values of the following registry. (These also disappear if you must uninstall and reinstall the receiver, be warned!)

  • HLKM Software Citrix Dazzle
  • Change " AllowAddStore "value" a "
  • Change" AllowSavePwd "value" a "
  • You must exit and restart the receiver.

when it was over, I just took a snapshot of the Windows 7 machine Master, and ran a "update disk" for my Windows 7 to push this catalog all my virtual machines. (I'm using MCS here ...)

I hope this helps you, once its up and running, it looks great and works like a charm, I also like much that dazzle , i mean "self-service" functionality is now built directly into the receiver 3.1.

My first MobileApp using Mobile SDK -

Today I AOVE created my first hosted mobile app running on XenApp. It, AOS no amazing app, but it shows how to handle the API using C #. As a reference I AOVE API used the following site: ¬ † http: //www.citrixcloud.net/mobilesdk/

For development purposes only, I installed the pack AOVE Mobility, XenApp Mobile SDK and Visual studio 2010 on my demo XenApp server. First I AOVE created a new C # Windows Form project and refers to the Interop.CitrixMobility.dll of bin x64 in the project.

The purpose of my first application is to bring up the keyboard to the virtual appliance.

using CitrixMobility;

 private CitrixMobile cmpCom; this.cmpCom CitrixMobile = new (); var = comHandle this.cmpCom as iKeyboard; state CMP_KEYBOARD_STATE CMP_KEYBOARD_STATE = new () {= KybdAutoCaps CMP_KEYBOARD_AUTOCAPS.CMP_KYBD_AUTO_CAPITAL_NONE, EditFieldRect CMP_DISPLAY_RECT = new () {Bottom = 0, left = 0, right = 0, top = 0}, KybdFlags = 0 = KybdReturnKey CMP_KEYBOARD_RETURNKEY.CMP_KYBD_RETURN_KEY_DEFAULT, KybdType = CMP_KEYBOARD_TYPE.CMP_KYBD_TYPE_STANDARD}; comHandle.ShowKeyboard (state ref);

After the build process is complete, I AOVE released the App using the XenApp Delivery Services Console. Stay tuned, in my next year, I'll play with the camera interface.

Have you recently upgraded to 6.0 PVS? Have you noticed the feature read-only LUN has been removed? Was this an option that you previously used to consolidate your vDisk and make the management and maintenance vDisk?

Other options such as replication and share files enter data management costs, inefficient use of storage and single points of failure and offers no ability to scale, less-than -stellaires performance and various other adverse outcomes.

If you are looking for a simple approach to simplify the vDisk management and optimize storage utilization while improving application fault tolerance, scalability and performance, click here and discover how hundreds of Citrix customers worldwide achieve each of these objectives and to achieve the best return on their investments in XenApp and XenDesktop powered by Provisioning services (PVS).

USB over Network with XenServer 6

USB over Network with XenServer 6 -

Notes:

  • The following configuration was used on XenServer 6.0.2 and 6. I also used previous versions of USB-Redirector on instances of XenServer 5.x, but will not cover installation.
  • The solution has been rigorously tested and is not supported by Citrix.
  • This article does not go into detail on how to use the Linux command line. Please refer to the Linux documentation for more information if necessary.

Since early versions of XenServer 5 I wanted to run my print server as a virtual machine. The problem is that XenServer does not natively support USB passthrough anything but mass storage devices. It made me look at other solutions. One solution that is popular is the approach of the equipment used by companies like Digi. This approach works, but is prohibitively expensive for a very small home office deployment, which led me to look for a cost-effective software solution. At first I tried a few different implementations, but there were relatively few solutions that have allowed the use of Linux as a USB Network Server.

One that I found to work, and have used it for about 3 years now is USB Redirector Incentives Pro. The Linux-based server is actually free, but you pay for the client side when using Windows (as in my case). That said, I find this solution to be the most profitable at the time, and although I have not done extensive research in recent times, I am still waiting to be very, if not the most profitable.

Before someone suggests that Open Source USB / IP project would be more profitable, I tried using it after XenServer 6 was released. If memory serves, I think I had a little success with it, but use it with specific printers that I should not work properly. It offers hope for future implementation, but at the time I tried the project and XenServer stars are not aligned.

So before getting into the nitty gritty, here's what I had to do. I XenServer 6.0.2 running on a machine, and I wanted to connect a Sony UP-D75 printer picture in XenServer USB device and transmits it in a Windows Server 03 VM running on the same resource pool . The printer is quite old, and therefore they do not make a driver for newer operating systems, so I'm stuck with 03.

Now, without further ado ... the process.

Compiling the kernel module

  • Download DDK for the version of XenServer you use http://www.citrix.com/English/ss/downloads/
  • Inside ISO DDK is the DDK virtual appliance. Do one of the following:
    • remove meter DDK ISO
    • mount the ISO
    • burn the ISO image to CD, insert the CD the maching running XenCenter

    then imported via XenCenter

  • Power on the VM DDK and answer questions firstboot
  • log on to the DDK either at the console or through an SSH session
  • Download Redirector for Linux from USB http://www.incentivespro.com/usb-redirector-linux-i386.tar.gz:
     wget http: //www.incentivespro.com/usb -redirector-linux-i386.tar.gz
  • Extract the archive:
     tar xzvf uSB-redirector-linux-i386.tar.gz
  • Change in the resulting directory:
     usb cd-redirector-linux-i386
  • Run the installation program to compile the kernel module and install in DDK:
     ./ installer.sh install-server
  • Change to the parent directory:
     cd ..
  • Create an archive directory installing the kernel module compiled for your specific version of XenServer:
     tar czvf uSB-redirector-linux-i386-XS6.0.2-53456p.tgz uSB-redirector-linux-i386
  • Copy the archive to the correct version of XenServer that you want to install on: root@10.10.1.10
     scp uSB-redirector-linux-i386-XS6.0.2-53456p.tgz: / root

If desired, uninstall the USB-redirector of the DDK

 uninstall /usr/local/usb-redirector/uninstall.sh

this is all we will need the DDK, so you can do what you want.

now it's time to install on your XenServer

Installing USB Redirector on XenServer

  • Log into your XenServer or at the console or through SSH session
  • Extract the archive that you copied from the DDK:
     tar xzvf uSB-redirector-linux-i386-XS6.0.2-53456p.tgz
  • change in the resulting directory:
     usb cd-redirector-linux-i386
  • Then we need to change the setup so it does not try to compile the kernel module, we have already done. There are two ways to do it. The first is to make the changes manually using vi. If you are not comfortable editing text files on Linux, you can use the second method of applying a patch. complete the two following patterns:

    Manual Patch

     vi installer.sh

In usbsrv_install () function comment on the following 3 lines with hash marks (#)

if [ ! -d $KERNELDIR ] then exit_with_error "Kernel source or headers directory not found kernel. Please install the corresponding package first." fi

In usbsrv_make_kernel_module () function comment on the following 2 lines with hash marks (#):

     do KERNELDIR = $ clean KERNELDIR> / dev / null 2> & 1 make MAKE_FLAGS $ $ $ KERNELDIR driver_config KERNELDIR => $ script_dir / buildlog.txt 2> & 1

    Save and close the file

    Automated patch

Download the patch and patchfile installer.sh .:

     wget /blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/installer.patch_.zip unzip installer.patch_.zip Patch installer.sh.patch -i
  • Run the installer:
     ./ installer.sh install-server
  • now, you must change the firewall settings so that customers can connect to your USB server:
     vi / etc / sysconfig / iptables

    add

     state --state NEW tcp -m -m -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp --dport 32032 - j ACCEPT

before the declaration REJECT, by default, the third to the last line, making it look like the following:

     ... Status --state NEW tcp -m -m -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp - j ACCEPT state --dport 80 --state NEW tcp -m -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -p tcp --dport 443 j ACCEPT -A state RH-Firewall-1-INPUT --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 32032 j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -j REJECT --reject-COMMIT with icmp-host-prohibited
  • Restart the firewall service:
     iptables restart services

kernel module Shades / driver

Depending on the device you are wanting sharing, there may be a driver installed on XenServer which will become active when you plug the device conflicts and provoke. In my case, I share a USB printer Sony. When I plug the printer, by default, grabs the driver usblp hold of the device, which is not what I want, then I have to turn it off. To determine if a driver is enabled for a given device BEFORE connecting the device, run the following command:

 0 -fn tail / var / log / messages

This will keep a connection open the message file and if anything it writes messages will also be displayed in your session. In my case, the following messages were displayed when I plugged in the device:

February 29 1:48:35 p.m. schizo kernel: usb 2-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 February 29, 13: 48: 35 schizo kernel: usb 2-4: configuration # 1 chosen from 1 choice February 29 1:48:36 p.m. schizo core: usblp0: bidirectional USB printer if dev 5 0 0 proto alt 2 0x054C vid pid 0x0202 29 February 13: 48:36 schizo core: usbcore: usblp registered new interface driver

After disconnecting the device, the driver remains responsible usblp. This is determined by the following command:

 lsmod | head

which in my case has produced the following output:

 [root@schizo ~] # lsmod | Size head module Used by usblp 9577 0 iptable_filter 1277 1 ip_tables 8497 1 iptable_filter tusbd 32182 1 cifs 210827 4 nfs 257444 1 nfs_acl 2153 32640 1 nfs auth_rpcgss 1 NFS lockd 61583 1 nfs

To unload the module, the rmmod

 rmmod usblp

To disable the module:

 echo usblp blacklist> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-usblp

generically, this would be:

 echo blacklist > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-

Sharing a USB device from XenServer

now it's time to share a USB device with your newly installed USB server. Connect a USB device that you want to share into the XenServer, and then share it with USB Redirector:

To find the options available to you:

 usbsrv

To see the devices attached to the system and their status:

 usbsrv -list

this is what I get on my server:

[root@schizo usb-redirector-linux-i386] # usbsrv -list ====== =========== USB SERVER OPERATION SUCCESSFUL =============== list USB devices: 1: Virtual Keyboard and Mouse American Megatrends Inc. Vid USB composite device: 046B Pid: FF10 Port: 1-3.1 Status: trendy 2: UP-D75 Sony USB printer Vid: 054c Pid: 0202 Port: 2-3 Status: trendy ================ ===== ======================= ===================

To share a USB device:

 usbsrv -s 2

or

usbsrv -share -vid 054c -pid 0202 -usbport 2-3

now, notice the status "shared" for the Sony printer:

[root@schizo usb-redirector-linux-i386] # usbsrv -list ================= USB SERVER USE = = SUCCESS ============= list USB devices: 1: Virtual Keyboard and Mouse American Megatrends Inc. USB composite device Vid: Pid 046B: FF10 Port: 1-3.1 Status: trendy 2: UP -D75 Sony USB printer Vid: 054c Pid: 0202 Port: 2-3 Status: trendy, shared ===================== ======== == =================== =============

Connect to a shared device from a customer

to use the shared device on a client machine to download the client and connect to the USB shared resource. I used Windows and downloaded the v5.1 USB Redirector Client. After installing the client, run it.

You must add the license using "Enter the license key ..." from the Help menu.

After you "Add USB Server ..." from the Connect menu, using the XenServer IP address.

assuming that the server adds correctly, you can then click on the USB device and "Connecting USB Device" from the Connect menu.

then your device will be connected and you can install the driver for the device and start using it.

and that's all there is to it! Good luck!

He Said She Said - Complex / Difficult - Part 3 -

Welcome back to the "He Said She Said" mini series. Just had to get that out of the way, I am proud of trying to be a comedian mini (not really happening, I guess). Well it's been three part blog into four parts that I started and I hope you have found things to be educational, well, more information

Part 1 -. / Blogs / 2011/12/28 / she-said-he said-intro-to-lee --- part-1 /

Part 2 - / blogs / 2011/12/29 / he-said -she-said-multiple-station- --The-2 /

Today i want to talk about the complex propaganda / Difficult which has been poured into. I always looked at this statement as funny because, in fact, something new is considered complex ordifficult. I recently bought a new car that has ton of features and I'm just confused on how to lower the volume of GPS, but now navigation and operation of "advanced" features are simple; So I see this as one that describes something new.

Before starting Citrix VMware I am a guy, so I knew how to navigate and configure vSphere, vCenter and View fine. So of course when I started playing with XenServer, XenDesktop XenCenter and I find that things are a bit confusing because it was not what I was used to. To be honest, I can also say the same thing about VMware products when I started working with them. For example, I did not know how to configure a port group so that I can add a new iSCSI LUN or how to add Vlans vSwitch. After setting up a laboratory at home, via the vendor and documentation of partners and online training (can not post here supplier) I am able to get down my routine tasks and begin to understand how to configure and test the most advanced operations. The same can be said about Citrix, Cisco and Microsoft solutions, once you get in the different management interfaces move and the tasks you remember what menu item does this and that tab means this, doing everything falls into place.

another thing that can make the Citrix solution seems complex is that we offer a complete solution. What does it mean???? What we mean by this that we offer a complete range of technologies with XenDesktop, such as Machine Creation Services (MCS), XenApp for application virtualization, Provisioning Services for image management simplistic master vPersonal Disk (a my favorite technologies) and so on. As you can see, we offer a full compliment of technologies to help you successfully achieve your desired end result. After working with Citrix Consulting Services or Citrix partner you can win that basic hands on that will help you understand things and making movement around Citrix a breeze.

The background uses Citrix XenServer, XenCenter, XenDesktop and so on .. are just as simple as VMware products - if not easier

as always feedback is always encouraged

Go beyond device and entity level - Authorization

In the previous blog (/ blogs / 2012/03/02 / get-command-center-get-smooth-sharp -and-an- intelligent authorization-setup-in-your-deployment /), we covered how to get the entity and the level of the unit through authorization Command Center. In this blog, we'll see, using Command Center how we can allow users to specific message types as well.

You insulate administrative access to different users to manage Citrix NetScaler devices like, SDX, repeaters and Branch AGED individually. Now, ideally with Command Center to manage all these devices in your deployment, you would reflect the same level of segregation between these directors through Command Center as well. To do this, using Command Center you deploy the device level and, if necessary, the entity-level authorization and creating groups and configuration Advanced Settings (as mentioned in the previous blog: / blogs / 2012/03/02 / get-command-center-get-smooth and strong-a-smart-authorization-setup-in-your-deployment /).

With Command Center, you can even allow these users to be able to view only a set of alarms. This will allow the particular user to be able to display not only an alarm of the specific device, but only the specific types of alarm it needs to ensure that does not go unnoticed.

Let's see how we can configure it.

Step 1: Go To Faults Alarms >>

Step 2: Click description [ the type of alarm you want to assign. In this case, we selected Down Entity Class 10.102.40.16 Source

Step 3 :. Click Assign and select the user name. Click OK .

The root administrator will also be able to see the history of the people assignment for this specific type of alarm (as outlined below).

If, for users of the summons, simply click unpick (as shown above) present in the upper right of the window.

With these simple steps we awarded Down Entity type 10.102.40.16 alarm to the user device, named adam . This will allow adam to be able to view only Down Entity type 10.102.40.16 device under Faults >> alarm Alarms.

This feature adds another granular permission level that can be facilitated by Command Center!

Fast Moving Clouds

- Greetings from Europa Park in Germany! Tomorrow I will take the main stage speaking to thousands of cloud Hosting Days world suppliers. My presentation is called, "All clouds are not the same: what is yours" In an industry where everyone claims to offer a cloud service, who will be successful and survive are those that allow identify a differentiation strategy. Your cloud needs to offer a unique set of value, expertise and service - and one way to do this is to include desktop and cloud applications in your portfolio

this is the strategy that our Citrix 1,500-plus-service. Providers (CSPs) take. And by the tremendous growth in licenses and partners that we see every month, it seems to be a strategy that works.

From the product point of view, my team is working hard to give cloud providers with tools and technology to offer these unique services. I am proud to announce the release of the Citrix Cloud Provider Pack for shared hosted desktops. This set of technologies complements our office hosted solutions provide new levels of automation, seamless hybrid cloud experience and mobility

App orchestration technology :. We hear time and again that cloud providers are looking for ways to reduce the costs of managing their hosted desktop. The best way to achieve this is by automating time consuming tasks, such as application and desktop configuration, deployment and maintenance lifecycle. From a single multi-tenant console, the cloud provider's administrator can initiate these tasks and then simply wait for confirmation of completion. This orchestration of application layer functions across multiple sites and farms, and integrates directly with CloudPortal Services Manager to allow free self-admin- Service

Next generation seamless application of technology :. The reality is that, today, people get their applications from anywhere - from the local office, a center on-site data and public cloud. This latest iteration of the technology transparent application "stitching" together experience from multiple sources in a single desktop experience. Users can have a desktop hosted in the cloud, but still have access to their local applications (iTunes, DVD players, etc.) and hosted business applications (CRM, HR, etc.). The great benefit for hosted desktop providers is that it means they can onboard customers a basic workspace immediately, then migrate additional applications over time as needed

Windows for tablets :. Remote access to a Windows desktop from an iPad looks cool, but a few minutes of experience, you start to notice the little icons are difficult to operate, scrollbars are difficult to use, and keyboards will arise when expected - and when they do, they block the part of the screen you are trying to view. The Mobility Pack (update in this version of the cloud provider pack) helps transform the desktop experience in a friendly tactile tablet optimized environment.

We build and test these technologies specifically against our DaaS Reference Architecture, which allows us to focus on a specific use case and get the technology published faster. While the cloud provider is just to pack CSPs, rest assured that Citrix evaluates many different requirements for enterprise environments as well. Over time, you can see some of these cloud providers technologies work their way into the products of the main line, as you saw the Pack automation service provider to become a part of XenDesktop and XenApp last year .

The Cloud Provider Pack will be available to the DSP by the end of this month - look for updates and blogs of our technical teams when it comes out. (The Mobility Pack is available to all Citrix customers separately.)

XenClient use Series Case: Simplify Management of Corporate Desktop Images -

When the last time you heard an IT administrator said that their work is so much easier now or how they like their job? No doubt an IT administration work function is both vast and unique to the environment in which they are located. A certain segment of the community of the IT administrator focuses on building, deploying and managing enterprise desktop images through laptops and desktops in businesses. IT admins now have to manage a wide range of devices and software applications their users need to work. Traditional tools have not changed much, but enough to handle the challenges of physical and virtual desktops, applications, devices and everything in between.

The desktop virtualization technology is now available to provide the same kind of advantages that virtualization server was able to deliver in the backend of the business. Through the abstraction of the software stack from the hardware layer underlying the desktop image can be easily deployed, managed, protected and optimized.

Here are some common challenges that IT administrators face every day, some of them may be apparent:

  • traditional desktop management tools often require dedicated, network connection business to deploy images and office updates. The connectivity requirement makes it more difficult for businesses to manage laptop users in remote offices / branch offices or mobile employees do not always have dedicated connectivity.
  • Business data leaving the company every time a worker carries a laptop Business on the door, making the protection of hard data, resources and prone to user or tinkering human error.
  • for IT, a key element of the value of desktop virtualization is the ability to standardize on a desktop finite approved OS and applications, and maintain a single well-managed virtual machine (VM) in as golden statue for the company. But workers often install their own applications or make other modifications to the blank image, which greatly complicates the management and the creation of application risk and incompatibility system, security vulnerabilities and other problems.
  • Provisioning and Support of desktop images for notebook users can be both resources and time. New workers are unable to become immediately productive, reducing business agility. When a portable hardware component fails then a worker is out of office, he often has to be brought into the office for repair, delaying work and stalling productivity.
  • Companies generally rely on specific approved hardware vendors, models and software versions because of hardware-related limits / requirements. This restricts how desktop images can be easily deployed and managed in enterprises.

Corporate workers want performance and flexibility, many of which need to work anywhere at any time. At the same time, IT administrators need ease of management, effective control and security without compromise for desktop images and laptops that they are responsible. With image management methods traditional office, these two requirements may seem difficult or impossible to reconcile. local virtual office can effectively solve some major problems where traditional desktop image management tools have come to court.

XenClient and his management background, Synchronizer for XenClient, provide many additional management capabilities for laptops and desktops, including backup / data recovery for laptops, updates software updates and patches for virtual desktops, and virtual desktop security. the user to desktop image changes can be prevented or easily reversed to maintain standardization. desktop images are delivered in a centrally managed environment, which speeds up the integration process for new workers. When a laptop is lost, stolen or incapacitated due to a hardware failure, a worker can simply pull down a new image of gold from the server to start from scratch or download the most recent backup their existing virtual desktop from the backend management server to resume work on their new laptop. The workers also gain the freedom and flexibility to run multiple environments on the same laptop, as a standard business office of the company, in addition to workstations optimized for the demo, customer or personal use. He admins will definitely see the value in considering the local virtual desktop solution like Citrix XenClient in their box in desktop image management tools.

These are not your fathers XenServer -

In years past many do not know that Citrix had a fully functional hypervisor (less hosting providers, but are they right !!! They only provide for millions of businesses and individuals), but we had a great product that has not been a focus because many were using VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V. That never stopped our dedicated development team, and with this extreme dedication, they produced a higher-level hypervisor that offers all the features that other hypervisors offer; such as:

  • High Availability
  • Site Recovery
  • live VM migration
  • Dynamic Memory Management
  • Power Distribution Management
  • GPU pass-through for VDI
  • Easy [1945005nodemanagement]
  • do not need a separate management server with SQL

organizations are beginning to see that XenServer is an inexpensive basic hypervisor, there is a ready solution for the fully functional business that is meeting and exceeding the expectations of their business needs.

The Shared Services Center of the US Army saw a need to make a change in the way they were virtualize their server infrastructure, determined by taking advantage of Citrix XenServer is the right way to answer their needs. Read the official case study here.

How Doom Cloud: Forget Networking

4:59 PM Add Comment
How Doom Cloud: Forget Networking -

The number of construction in clouds that are doomed to failure is staggering. Which is a shame because manufacturers are getting better day by day.

Let me explain.

At Citrix, we get the benefit of talking to many people who are actively building clouds. They come and tell us about various projects they are working on; VDI networking for basic virtualization. For example, not too long ago, we talked with a team from a systems integrator (SI), which had plans to build their own cloud to offer their customers - not an uncommon strategy. After laying their plans for cloudify computing, storage and applications, I had to ask about their networking plans.

Like many others, they really had not thought of. The assumption was that "networking was already there" and no other thought was necessary. As you can imagine from the title of this blog, saying "the networking is done" in speaking of the cloud is a cloud to condemn to failure

Here's the problem :. Two of the main goals with clouds is multi-tenancy and elasticity. Networks, as they are traditionally built today do not realize one of these aims. Most networks are traditional hierarchies with several levels with a series of silos for application proxy. So when a single instance (either an application or tenant) must stretch beyond the hierarchy can support, bad things happen. Manual changes are required, assuming that the change can be supported at all.

For example, consider the simple case of having wide infrastructure with computing resources. The right way to do this is to have the network infrastructure to work with the level of orchestration so that the additional load is detected, additional servers are spun and the network is configured to automatically put these new online resources . Lose elasticity, lose value.

On the surface, this seems geekery. Except it is not . Build a network that has features such as multi-tenancy, elasticity and coordination with the orchestration requires a game plan is laid out in front and from the top. The IOC needs to work with its management team to ensure that all players are eligible to be part of the solution from the beginning. Operating from a single point of view and try to include other elements (eg, starting with calculation and then try to wrap it in storage and networking later) are safe ways fire to give a result unoptimized.

Fortunately, Citrix is busy working on tools to help.

There are not enough to build products. we really see the next step is to provide solutions that integrate different components as much as possible so that they work off-the-shelf. In the case of cloud and networking, there are three key aspects to the solution:

Making the Cloud Ubiquitous . Between CloudStack, XenServer and NetScaler, Citrix occupies large footprints in over 75% of the cloud market today. We know what makes them tick and how clouds make them succeed. But to really make their ubiquitous requires building an ecosystem of developers, tools and partners. To make the first move, Citrix recently contributed part of CloudStack to the Apache Foundation together to pull the juice from the developer community. This kickstart active tinkering so we can see the next generation of tools and products designed with the cloud as an integral component in mind. For publishers of traditional enterprise software, an Apache CloudStack provides a particularly interesting opportunity to connect in a truly open ecosystem where their work can remain theirs if they wish. We expect that this will lead to greater involvement of the major software vendors and a Starter growing community is good for everyone in the space clouds.

Integrating networks . CloudStack has integrated networking elements early on with various open source tools based on Linux providing routing batteries, NAT capabilities, and automation. But the way a router and firewall are considered key elements of any modern network, quality controllers of the service delivery business that offer features such as L4-7 load balancing become as much of a requirement if not more. NetScaler in particular, is a strong solution in this space and is a start with the work of active integration much like trivial integration API past. Developers are already asking how they can improve the workflow for corporate deployments and keep the promise of cloud around scalability, elasticity and multi-tenancy. We expect 2012 to be an exciting year on this front.

Automate . Forget how the network is a sure way to condemn a cloud, forgetting to automate is a similar question. Automation is particularly striking when looking at how the network is automated so that it can dynamically act and react to application changes, changes in rental, etc. Tools for automating the well documented API through are first on the list to ensure that both conformists scripts and software companies have what they need.

This is how we will ensure to network in the cloud. Now it's your turn .

top back down . Take a look at the strategic plans of the clouds that have been set out and be honest with yourself: Is it really up and down? Are all actors involved? They are a significant example? If the project started from a team or there is one team "cloud", then chances are that something becomes the tree in the design and it will be a problem later. Start top down and be honest -. Ensure that all stakeholders are at the table

Revisit your default . Every large organization, be it a company, telco, or SI had a set of default values to them when they need to achieve the common task done. Need another disk rack? Call EMC representative. Need a switch or router? Call Cisco. Even Citrix has been a benefactor in that need a remote desktop? Call Citrix. But when it comes to the cloud, all paris open. Each vendor has their cloud approached differently and all methods will not be consistent with your strategy. Revisit your default choice for the tools you use. This does not mean existing suppliers can not work. - This simply means that sellers even existing need an honest assessment to ensure they are compatible with your cloud strategy

Revisit your process. There are opportunities, operations team has a number of well-defined and well thought through process. While elsewhere in the office, someone asks why the great players of clouds become one administrator 4000 servers. Much of the answer comes down to the process. Too many processes are not automated well today and make a success cloud, not to mention the network, it is based on achievement, requires automation. APIs are the new CLI and processes that do not take a hard look at how automation can simplify the steps are doomed to failure

The net-net of all this chatter is simple .: the rules for everything we do in our infrastructure is changing. The things we have taken for granted, such as networking are completely redefined. The criticism most if key elements such as your network are not a part of your new underlying design, it is almost guaranteed that your big plans for cloud greatness fail.

I do not want augurs ill will of the infrastructure, but if you do not want to condemn your cloud project, do not forget networking.

This was done last year with NetScaler 9.2. Release for Citrix Virtual Computing Demo Contest 2010. This demo then shows the firewall configuration NetScaler Application and showing what goes on these attacks. This is very good info that we wanted to share with our blog readers. Of course in Software 9.3 release, there are more updated wizards and easy steps to change the rules as needed, and more available models that can be found in our previous blogs, but this demo certainly worth d go through as well.

Announcing CloudGateway 1.0 - first unified service broker of - industry

I am pleased to announce the CloudGateway 1.0 - first broker unified industry service.

Every company faces two major trends - consumerization of IT and cloud-sourcing applications. Both trends are driving an explosion of devices and applications within the enterprise. Devices made to the company by the users themselves, and applications developed by the company LOB. Both the demand for mobility and SaaS proliferation and mobile applications disrupt traditional methods built IT, and delivers application control for users. We all know that traditional systems and processes are far from meeting the needs of IT because they were never designed for new applications and cloud devices. IT has, increasingly, been forced to respond to each new application or a new device on an ad-hoc basis, largely through silo'ed solutions. Silo'ed These solutions are increasingly rigid, inefficient and chaotic putting companies at risk of loss of productivity, agility stalled and the loss of intellectual property.

To regain control and get ahead of these disruptive trends, unified search rather than siled solutions - Unified Services Brokers that can aggregate, control and deliver all content (all applications - Web, Windows, SaaS and mobile applications - and data). in all contexts (people, devices, locations)

CloudGateway is the first unified service broker that aggregates industry, controls and provides all data and applications, including Windows, web, SaaS and mobile, to any device, anywhere. It provides end users with a single access point via Citrix Receiver intuitive and self-service to all of their business applications on any device anywhere, and provides a single, comprehensive point of aggregation and control for all applications.

CloudGateway is fully integrated with Citrix Receiver, which is available to more than 1.5 billion devices, including PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones. App streaming - VHD Mount on XenApp

App streaming - VHD Mount on XenApp -

In a previous article, I described the new capabilities in streaming app to use VHD 6.5 mounted to implement the layer cake on XenDesktop. These are great things for the image of the operating system that separates the image of the application and greatly helps administrator managing IT systems in a virtualized world XenDesktop + pool. Some comments in the previous article and similar requests from the sales and customer channels engineer wonder if the same "montage" of the execution content is possible within a XenApp world. This is an interesting question as it deserves its own post.

First let's back up and talk about why editing application images is necessary and specifically why editing is more efficient than copying data in the execution machine. Given the XenDesktop implementation is based on a virtual machine and the machine as "resets" virtual to baseline at each login, copy RadeCache data in the execution machine while running is an expensive operation which occurs at each logon. It would fill the space, but the copies would have to repeat each time the user connects to the hosted desktop.

A more efficient method declares disk writes "evil" and uses VHD Mount to place the contents of the execution of streaming in the execution machine as reoriented READS. The disk accesses RadeCache is reflected in the mounted VHD, effectively moving disk IRPS C: to the network stack. It also significantly reduces the number of disk writes that all cache operations for the streaming content will already be "current", saving the reading of the App Hub and writing on the local disk C:. There is a cost that the network read operations are likely slower than the bed SAN disk, but the bet is that the elimination of entries well worth the costs of moving to a network disk reader infrastructure based slower .

The technology exists now and comes with the 6.5 client for streaming to enable the mounting of execution of content for XenDesktop performance. Here is a graph which shows this visually.

Content Editing App streaming in RadeCache

In the comments of the previous post, Serge de Klerk request

does anyone know if the .vhd assembly would work on Win03 XenApp servers?

There is a very valid question and one that I have received from some sources. The rapid and official answer is "no, this feature is only for XenDesktop virtualized execution." The long answer is' yes, but you have to do some manual steps. " The answer is that it is possible that it works now, although we did not expect it.

As a quick introduction, why use up performance for XenApp servers. The answer is that many XenApp administrators now demanding the execution of the virtualized machine and "layer cake" to their construction XenApp servers in the same way that it is used for XenDesktop. The same need exists in both places. In version 6.5, we have decided to resolve the XenDestkop but XenApp administrators go back and saying "HEY! We need this as "In XenApp however, there is one more thing to worry about -.. There are multiple users per machine

VHD Mounts dissected

a VHD file is mounted in a subdirectory of a Windows-based computer. Here, it looks like a book, but from the perspective of the Windows machine, it is a mount point and watching a local physical disk. this disc is "valid" for backing store to load .EXE and execution.

from the perspective of the network server the VHD file is just a file. a file like any other file and file that is great and maybe a lot of reading occurring and precisely written zero, but in the end it is just a file. a user opens the file and the file is accessed.

the streaming system called HDV device driver installation to connect a disk volume to a mount point with a given VHD file located on a network location accessible UNC. In the case of Windows 7, the VHD driver is the Microsoft driver included with Windows. In the case of Windows XP, the streaming client uses Citrix who did the same. A side note is that the Citrix streaming group "liberated" the pilot of Citrix Provisioning Services so we were able to avoid writing from scratch. When can we stop supporting Windows XP?

This is how it looks in RadeCache space with the output of a DIR command.

The question is, will work with XenApp? Or is it simply a XenDesktop functionality

Okay? - About to post

Consider for a moment that when the App streaming system mounted VHD, the local machine gets a junction point which is effectively the same as a letter reader. The remote machine (network server) has access to files from the machine and more specifically, the USER.

The streaming system to mount the VHD "borrows" the user's ability to get to the network server as data in the access to the VHD.

SO, it will work on XenApp? The answer is usually "no", but here it becomes quite interesting.

Consider a XenApp server with 100 users ...

  1. User A logs on to the XenApp server and performs the continuous application.
  2. User B logs on to the XenApp server and executes the streaming application
  3. of Lather rinse and repeat until you get all the 100 users on the machine.

A user logs off. This is the user whose access rights were borrowed for the streaming system could ride the run streaming content from the App Hub. What happens to users B and more?

theory of the base operating system says that when user A disconnects, the privilege of access to the network server and vaporizes the VHD mount point becomes invalid.

I went to tell people "it will not work" for months now and I even think about possible solutions to this problem.

where things get unexpected

In writing this post, I make a few experiments. My experiences say it "works", while my knowledge undoubtedly strong internal operating Windows said he should not.

Using my Windows 7 64-bit laptop as a test platform, I led the "1, 2, 3" above experiment. As expected, when the user runs an application A continuously running streaming cache is present for all other users of the machine. Where I became surprised is that when the user logs A, mount the VHD points are still there! This is something I've yet "known" would not work. So confident that this will not work there has never been a test value, but sit down and test ... and the execution content is always present. Hum

Update (31-Oct-11) :. The answer seems to be that the kernel-mode driver duplicates the handle user mode by creating a kernel object that points to the same file. When the user logs off, the reference in user mode for decrements of file objects, but the core of the reference stays in place, keeping the file open in view of the execution machine. What is interesting is that I expected the network server client to force close all the user's files when the user logs off. This seems not to occur and allows the kernel driver to continue with successful access to files even when the user has left.

Going back to the question of Serge

> Does anyone know if the assembly. VHD could run on XenApp Win03 servers?

Never assume

My experience was above on Windows 7 64-bit. This implies that all my previous statements that this will not work are not true. But that is incomplete.

I was told people that will not work because of the assumptions I have about how the VHD files are installed in Windows. The reality is that it does not work the way I understood it. It seems that the VHD Windows device driver "clings" to the open file handle to the network server, and wishes to handle this after the user disconnects. In other words, the user who triggered the first VHD mounting need not always be connected to the VHD driver to keep things accessed the first user assisted the pilot to access. Interesting!

multiple endings

Like a good novel, this blog seems to have multiple endings. I had planned to end this post with using the XenApp administrator if the streaming system can not keep up the VHD alive, you can administrator. Create mount points outside the scope of the App streaming and the system will have these "directories" already present at the execution. The streaming system supports "magic" for how to mount points have been created and if they exist, it will use to run the streamed content. This is by design and planned. This means that if the administrator takes steps to create a mount point, as the mount point will be used. The VHD will be mounted continuous work content on XenApp although when we decided to build the 6.5 version, we were really only targeting XenDesktop virtualized execution.

The reality of the end is that you can either work today despite never really being intended to be. It will take a series of tests on additional platforms to show off. In the question registered on the blog earlier, Serge asked about XenApp Server 03. Note that there are many things that are different here than in test 1 hour, I have done for this blog. Server 03 uses the VHD Citrix driver, not the Microsoft. I'll assume for a moment that VHD driver is installed when the Streaming Client 6.5 is installed on top of Server 03, but even this is not a valid assumption. Second assumption is that the OS server version behaves the same as the client version. In other words, on Server 08 (32, 64), Server 08 R2 and other flavors, will mount points remain as they show themselves to do it on my Windows 7 64-bit machine? I do not know the answer. Given the surprising results already here, making assumptions is a good idea

Update (31-Oct-11) :. Variety of people have reported to me that the case offline Server 03 is also managed and Server 08 R0.

wrapping

The official answer is that Citrix has never wanted the VHD mounting feature in the 6.5 Client Flow be used on XenApp servers. We do not expect that officially it works.

The official response is less than if the VHD media persist, then it should work. And I will do my best to help you succeed ...

Anyone who wants to volunteer for the tests and report the results?
