Bring Your Own (BYO) device perspective of a new employee: Part 2 -

Happy Holidays, everyone

In my last episode I have written about my early experience with a business PC as remote worker. When it came time to choose a computer for my personal use and work, I considered my options. I had always been a little envious of the few people at my previous employer who went rogue and MacBooks acquired. As an employee of Citrix, I am lucky enough to choose a laptop that I prefer, and I decided it was time to finally go Apple - I had an iPad, then just got the iPhone, so why do not make it a trifecta? The last time I really used a Mac was for a paper return to UCLA term, when a Macintosh dorm floor was the only personal computer in the city. I'm not dating myself, am I?

Now I find myself working for a manager who is a big fan of Mac, and it seems that all the cool kids in town have. I also learned from a recent survey of BYO program my company that the majority of employees participating in the Citrix BYO plan also bought Macintosh systems. I felt confident that I was surrounded by sufficient expertise to try to make a significant change.

Once the Mac has arrived, it was deceptively easy to implement. When I'm online, the next priority was to get on the corporate network. I already had a hard RSA soft token, if authentication was easy. All I really needed to do was to download Citrix Receiver (for Mac in this case) from the Citrix.com download center and get the correct URL of my IT department to access applications and desktops . Receiver prompts the user to that URL again, and you plug in and go

Almost instantly I had access to all my Windows applications via Receiver -. Including Internet Explorer, SAP, our company intranet and more. With a little trial and error, I learned that I go through VPN and access to resources through my local browser. Of course, some business applications are fully compatible with Firefox, so receiver with a published version of IE saves the day in these cases.

Regarding the storage and sharing of documents, there are several options. We can store some pieces on our own hard drives, but each employee has a bit of space on shared disks, and various forms of cloud storage (Dropbox, Box.net and now ShareFile) have become very popular. Since many Citrites use multiple devices in multiple locations, be able to access our shared documents in the cloud is a huge advantage. Now that the concept ShareFile and Follow Me data are part of the Citrix strategy, we will eat our own cooking when it comes to sharing files and data as well.

My BYO user experience continues to improve, and I like the flexibility it brings. I do not have to feel guilty about using my computer as I will, but I can access system resources as required for safe and efficient manner. A recent Citrix survey highlighted in the BYO programs are here to stay, almost all businesses (94%) plan to have a BYO policy in mid-2013, so be on the lookout for an entry a company near you!

Have a safe and prosperous 2012!
