One of the new features of Branch Repeater 6.0 is traffic shaping module that allows a level of better QoS and more granular to provide protocols and applications over the WAN - including virtual desktops and applications. This formatting function of traffic Branch Repeater coupled with the new implementation HDX multi-stream for XenDesktop 5.5 and XenApp 6.5 allows us to prioritize optimally HDX traffic when bandwidth is at a premium over WAN connections (is -he always?).
for a very good explanation of these features, see this blog from Kalyan Valicherla.
What I want to discuss here is how these characteristics guarantee a better experience for the end user while accessing virtual desktops and applications in various bandwidth scenarios in competition. For this, we looked at two sample scenarios showing these features in action:
- Traffic Shaping between HDX and not HDX traffic: With traffic shaping, we can assign a higher priority to latency-sensitive protocols like HDX deliver virtual desktops powered by XenDesktop compared to non-latency-sensitive protocols like FTP. thus providing guaranteed bandwidth required for HDX sessions even while supporting a large number of lower priority FTP (and other types of traffic) over the same WAN link
- Traffic Shaping for HDX multi-Streams :. With HDX multi-stream, we can apply the traffic policy Branch Repeater to each of the four (4) flow HDX (ie in real time, interactive, bulk and context) group of virtual channels carrying each. These flows are prioritized ensuring guaranteed bandwidth for latency-sensitive Real-time and interactive streams of loose and the bottom traffic. For example, an end user session running HDX mainly Interactive traffic will receive higher priority compared to other end users conducing heavy tasks bandwidth consumption such as watching video and printing large files over the same WAN link. Similarly, more granular performance advantages are exposed prioritize different currents within a single session HDX ensuring user performance of various activities within their own HDX session.
This white paper "Citrix HDX multi-stream and Branch Repeater Traffic Shaping" examines the scenarios listed above in much more detail and provides the configuration steps required to implement these features in Citrix Branch Repeater and XenDesktop
