IPv6 Migration - What, why and how

The first step to a service provider is to understand and define the scope of IPv6 deployment: It can go for assigning IPv6 addresses to clients, the upgrade of the backbone to IPv6 or supporting content providers migrating to IPv6. Technology selection will purely depend on the segment (s) of migrating to IPv6 and the new connectivity requirements. Upgrading any segment mean the coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 - and for any deployment managed connectivity from end to end between old and new must exist. key component is of course the core routing infrastructure, but equally important are the support elements such as DNS, DHCP, and SNMP. An effective solution not only helps the migration of core routing infrastructure, but also integrates seamlessly with support elements. Mainly IPv6 migration technologies have been classified in three different categories:

The ability to connect to a destination depends on the technology deployed in the different segments of the infrastructure and capacity to carry and translate protocols. The following diagram summarizes the connectivity options available in the various network components:

As the above diagram clearly illustrates that there is technology available for all possible migration path and Service providers can start from where it is easier to make a move. No matter which way service providers choose, it is important to adopt a well-planned approach to ensure the smooth upgrade while reducing costs.

Let's take a look at each of these migration technology in the coming weeks.
