Monitoring cache size PVS Write

Monitoring cache size PVS Write -

One of the few missing features of Provisioning Services is a write cache of central monitoring center PVS, which measures the file size Write Cache Target Side (Cache settings on the HD customer) from a central location. It would be very useful for POC and pilots to estimate the storage requirements for the final infrastructure as well as trend analysis during normal operations.

As such functionality does not require huge coding skills, I spent some time today the development of a small tool that should help until we get as a feature of building appropriate PVS.

I am aware that there are several ways to do this and most of them are much more elegant than I do, but I tried to find the simplest approach. So I decided to go for the good old Windows batch script, which is understood by most admins out there and work ... J

So, the tool consists of two scripts and a file with all the goals we 'want to monitor. Scripts are:

  • Check_Write_Cache_Size.cmd , which reads targets.txt file line by line and calls the working script (of worker.cmd) with a parameter the location of the write cache file (default is d :. vdiskcache) and a second parameter that contains the name of the current target. Once the script has gone through all the targets, it will pause for 15 seconds and repeat.
  • Worker.cmd , which just reads .vdiskcache file size (in bytes) and written together with a certain time and date information in a csv file. Hereby, it will create a single file for each target device (which is why we pass the computer name as the second parameter)

Both scripts assume to live inside C :. Temp. If you do not want to, just modify the relevant sections within scripts. Also, you must run the scripts with administrative user who is able to access the share target of $ peripherals. Finally, you must include all the goals you want to monitor in the Targets.txt file. Each target needs to be on a single line. Below is an example of Targets.txt:

Targets.txt

Windows7PVS001

Windows7PVS002

Windows7PVS003

to start the monitoring, it is easier to start a command prompt as an administrator (in case you use UAC) and move your prompt in the C: Temp. Then just call the Check_Write_Cache_Size.cmd script.

The following scripts, but please keep in mind that you need to be tested before running them in production. Also please check the disclaimer at the end of the blog:

Check_Write_Cache_Size.cmd

ECHO OFF

: Start

for / F %% i in (C: temp targets.txt) does cmd / Q /cc:tempworker.cmd %% i . d $ vdiskcache %% i

TIMEOUT / T 15 / NOBREAK

goto: Start

Worker.cmd

echo off

echo% date%% time%% ~ z1 >> C: temp 2.csv%

After stopping the script, you should see a single .csv file for each target. Everyone should look like the one below (please note that the size is in bytes):

Windows7PVS001.csv

Fri 11/04/2011 ; 9: 10: 00.65; 25811403

Fri, 04/11/2011; 9: 10: 15.33; 258 114 03

Fri 11/04/2011; 9: 10: 30.32; 265 324 452

Fri 11/04/2011; 9: 10: 45.33; 265328635

Fri, 04/11/2011; 9: 11: 00.32; 265328635

Fri, 04/11/2011; 9: 11: 15.31; 265 328 635

Fri 11/04/2011; 9: 11: 30.33; 273693421

Fri, 04/11/2011; 9: 11: 45.31; 273 720 012

Now just open Excel and import the csv. Be sure to mark the semicolon as separator. Now you should be able to create good little graphic on the size of the write cache.

If you would like more information on the PVS Write Cache, check my recent blogs (here and here).

Hangout with Citrix support on Google + -

Yesterday, Google announced Google+ Pages for businesses. Google+ is a social networking platform that competes with Facebook, well I guess that was the brainchild of Google, but for now failed to win his rivals supporters. Over the years Google has tried to jump on the social train, but failed with Google Wave and Google Buzz.

Google+ seems to offer a lot more than its predecessors, but has a lot to catch up if it wants to steal one of the market share that Facebook currently has

I was a kick tires on Google+ for several months now and really like it offers some features :.

  • Circles (cool way to organize your connections)
  • Hangouts (product / feature / broadcast live discussions)

Citrix already have Facebook page with nearly nearly 2,000 likes and with so many of our customes on Google+ was obvious for us to add a Google+ Citrix support page.

So come join us on Google+ and collaborate with our Citrix support social team.

So now you can socialize with Citrix support on:

  • Twitter here and here
  • Facebook
  • Google+
  • LinkedIn
  • Citrix Forums

I hope to see you there

CC 5.0 enhancements for NetScaler Branch Repeater Support -

The actions NetScaler Command Center all relevant device properties need to be shared to a user in the device properties tab repeater devices. According to information such as node status, build version, availability and much more as shown in the snapshot above, the command center shares a good level of information on relay devices.

De NetScaler Command Center 5.0 beta, we introduced details of two other attributes repeater devices, QoS status and serial numbers.

Let's make a quick sneak peek on these two attributes to understand their functionality and suitability to the command center.

Serial Number:

there was a new implementation of the write current serial numbers before the DMI it leaves the factory. Whereas, the repeater devices shipped between a given time period, only the serial number on the back of the physical devices. From the 5.5.4 / 2.0.4 firmware, serial numbers will be available on the GUI, LCD consoles CLI, XML-RPC pools and SNMP MIB as well.

De NetScaler Command Center 5.0, you will be able to see the serial number information repeater devices that are at least running 5.5.4 firmware. Information such as inventory using devices made using repeaters and Citrix support team at the opening of the cases. Command Center displays two values for serial numbers

  • The serial number of the unit -. If the serial numbers are written on the DMI Repeater devices and they are upgraded to 5.5.4 or above, the Command Center quickly display the devices serial number.
  • Not available from the unit - This message will be displayed for the reasons listed:
    • If the repeater device is a device VPX
    • If the software has not been updated to firmware 5.5.4 or above
    • If the serial number is not written on the DMI devices

QoS Status :.

This status means if traffic shaping is enabled on repeater devices or not. It is available from the repeater 5.5.5 and 5.7.1 releases only. There are three values of this attribute:

  • 1 - The traffic shaping function is activated at the repeater device
  • 2 - The formatting function traffic is turned off at the repeater device
  • 0 - This means that the repeater device does not support the SNMP protocol OID. This will usually be shown other than 5.5.5 and 5.7.1 releases of repeater devices.

With these improvements, we start the series of blogs on key improvements NetScaler Command Center 5.0 for repeater devices.

Look forward to more on improvements to support Branch Repeater on NetScaler NetScaler Command Center.

My question is, in this scenario, it is often necessary for a printer available to accept SAP print jobs. How would it work if we deliver SAP via a kind of VDI or streaming app and did not have a VPN

CloudGateway product was introduced as the first unified service broker that aggregates industry, controls and Windows offers, Web, SaaS and mobile apps to any user on any device. With Citrix Receiver, it provides the user portal and orchestration mechanism you speak. For business access to public clouds, recently announced CloudBridge extends the data center by providing an easy way to securely connect to additional capacity in the cloud. More information can be found here: http://www.citrix.com/English/NE/news/news.asp?newsID=2317397

Q: We do not currently use Citrix, how to treat Involved with other virtualization companies, Parallels specifically

As for Parallels, our application delivery infrastructure work with Parallals to provide applications to these virtual desktops

Q :. Is there a clear strategy for when it makes sense to use Citrix XA alone, and when it makes sense to combine it with APPV MS

? A: Yes, XenApp works perfectly with APPV and we often recommend APPV in certain circumstances. A good blog on the subject here: / blogs / 2010/03/12 / go-ahead-use-app-v-no-really-please /

Q: Are I have remote call Desktop Services licenses in all of these delivery scenarios

A:. you will need to RDS CALs for applications that you host

Q: In the case of Web services (such as LinkedIn mentioned in the video), how are the credentials of a secure connection on the XenServer

? A: There are two options for this, but the best is the recently announced CloudGateway which provides the ability to aggregate and control SaaS applications and services, such as LinkedIn. More info here: http://citrix.com/English/NE/news/news.asp?newsID=2317397

Q: What about printers? You are obviously far from the Office. But if I want to print something out of the office, which is part of the Citrix virtual desktop

A: XenDesktop can perfectly connect to and print local printers. So if a user accesses XenDesktop home, XenDesktop easily identifies and prints on printers connected to the computer at home

Q:.? What is the requirement of the network speed to run the XenApp server smoothly in a society

a: The following white paper provides a detailed answer: http://support.citrix.com/article / CTX124457

Q: Where are the newspapers preserved (for things like legal medicine)

A: the SmartAuditor feature included in XenDesktop and XenApp Platinum is often used by the organization needs keep track of the use of the access and application for compliance reasons. More info here: http://www.citrix.com/English/ps2/products/feature.asp?contentID=2300372#top

Q: Is there a hypervisor for netbooks

a: The hypervisor XenClient has a long list of laptops supported. The full list is here: http://www.citrix.com/ready/list/products?page=1&partnerPage=1¤tTab=product&rss=false¤tComparison=&h_Product_Citrix+Products=XenClient&h_0Categories_Categories=Notebooks+and+Desktops&pageSize=50&sortBy=Alpha&showGridExists=&gridOn= 1 & pageSizeSelect = 50 & partnerSortBy = Alpha & pageSizeSelect = 50

Q: an attacker who knows Google and some simple facts on the authentication of cloud services can easily find access codes, words password and secret keys necessary to unlock the data stored in the public cloud environments services if an attacker

? A: No.

Q: What happens if you try to use the same app / data with two devices simultaneously

A: smooth roaming means that the same user pulls the application or VM with them the next time they connect so they can not be registered in two

Q: .. What is the key element that provides high performance of hundreds of virtual machines runnning on a Hyper-V or XenServer? ie memory / CPU / disk / image VM

Checking In and Counting Down

Checking In and Counting Down -

I think technology has changed the holiday for the better. No, I do not mean virtual Santas, shopping on your smartphone from a comfortable sofa or Skyping with your family across the world (although these things are pretty cool). I mean he has changed the way we work for the best. It used to be that we would be completely disconnected from the office during the holiday break. Peaceful, yes, but then we'd often go back to the mountain of emails and voice messages. For me it was quite stressful - knowing how much I had to do when I return to work could curb these last moments of vacation. But now we can be connected anywhere, anytime, from any device, I think my stress has actually declined - I can take a few minutes here and there to respond to urgent emails or answer a question fast, and allow more in- depth programs to fight against when I come back.

You may have seen the recent viral "holiday" picture of a family in matching outfits, all heads down and typing on their phones. Pretty funny and oh so true for many families! But I am not advocating the work of the rent or a family time of interruption of mobile device quality during the holidays. In fact, I would say it might even help to promote more quality time! I am personally looking forward to watching my 10 year old niece and almost 5 years, nephew enjoy the season, and I do not want to miss this. Armed with my iPad, iPhone and Citrix Receiver, I think I will be able to achieve this quite easily

But that's just my opinion -. I'm curious how you will access work (or not) during the holidays. To make it easy on you (and let you enjoy the much hot cocoa with loved ones as possible), we plan to 2012 with one question per day between now and December 30th via Twitter and Facebook. So, take a second and tell us what you think!

How organizations around the world XenDesktop deployment with ease in 2011 using Sanbolic Melio -

Happy New Year Everyone!

For my first post of the new year, I wanted to provide a brief summary of what Citrix XenDesktop customers have been able to achieve in 2011 using Sanbolic Melio Distributed data management software.

  • hundreds of Citrix customers around the world started with XenDesktop Drivers / PoCs very quickly (within days, not weeks or months), with less effort and at lower initial cost .
  • After successful completion Drivers / PoCs, customers have moved their virtual desktop infrastructure into production while users working on their virtual desktops.
  • many customers who have made their XenDesktop Drivers / PoCs on Hyper-V stayed with Hyper-V when they moved their virtual desktop infrastructure in production.
  • As customers started realizing the benefits of VDI, they expanded their transparent infrastructure for the benefits of desktop virtualization to a larger scale, providing a greater return on their XenDesktop investments.

How?

  • They used Sanbolic Melio to create flexible pools of high availability shared storage from readers installed in industry-standard servers to store desktop images , virtual machines and SQL databases for their drivers / PoCs.
  • they leverage the unique advantages of Melio to deploy XenDesktop in their production environments using the same servers and storage they used for their drivers / PoCs.
  • they continued to take advantage of enterprise-class features (ie pole -Wide data protection, dynamic volume expansion, live migration of virtual machines and storage, quality service, etc.) provided by the combination of Hyper-V and Melio technology when they moved their virtual desktop infrastructure in production.
  • they took advantage of vast capabilities of Melio, including live storage / data migration and dynamic volume expansion, scale their virtual desktop infrastructures quickly and easily, no downtime of the system.

in the future ...

Sanbolic continue to help Citrix customers realize faster return and greater investment in their XenDesktop by:

  • Introducing the latest version of its SQL Server HA solution - AppCluster R2 , which provides high availability of PVS and XenDesktop databases.
  • further improve the innate mirroring capabilities of Melio to enable customers to use the disc in its commodity server hardware to create a low cost shared storage solution for PVS and Hyper- V.
  • Offering a cost effective DR solution that enables two active / active configurations and assets / liabilities for XenDesktop on geographically dispersed sites

Make this year you realize all the benefits XenDesktop has to offer!

IPv6 Migration - What, why and how

The first step to a service provider is to understand and define the scope of IPv6 deployment: It can go for assigning IPv6 addresses to clients, the upgrade of the backbone to IPv6 or supporting content providers migrating to IPv6. Technology selection will purely depend on the segment (s) of migrating to IPv6 and the new connectivity requirements. Upgrading any segment mean the coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6 - and for any deployment managed connectivity from end to end between old and new must exist. key component is of course the core routing infrastructure, but equally important are the support elements such as DNS, DHCP, and SNMP. An effective solution not only helps the migration of core routing infrastructure, but also integrates seamlessly with support elements. Mainly IPv6 migration technologies have been classified in three different categories:

The ability to connect to a destination depends on the technology deployed in the different segments of the infrastructure and capacity to carry and translate protocols. The following diagram summarizes the connectivity options available in the various network components:

As the above diagram clearly illustrates that there is technology available for all possible migration path and Service providers can start from where it is easier to make a move. No matter which way service providers choose, it is important to adopt a well-planned approach to ensure the smooth upgrade while reducing costs.

Let's take a look at each of these migration technology in the coming weeks.

Prepare your business for the future now -

Even people who think they do not fully grasp technological innovators how the workplace is changing. Things once considered benefits or extras employees are now part of doing business. Companies that do not meet what their workers want - including greater flexibility in their jobs and in their personal devices - could find obsolete themselves

Telework Week and the consumerization of IT event are a good time to reflect. these changes and the changes that alter our working world. Companies must recognize that bringing your own devices at work will not be an exception for much longer.

Companies looking to build a successful "BYOD" program may turn to Citrix to get an idea of how things are done. We do not sell only virtualization technology; we live our mission by allowing workers to use their own devices and manage their time to do the best job possible.

We started just now and have woven the idea "BYOD" the way we do business. Many of our employees use a laptop computer, their own smartphone and a tablet computer. We enable our employees to choose what works best. Our business applications allow then to do their work and to access their data, no matter where they are or what device they are using.

Some concern about the security of cloud computing, but it actually keeps things safer computing Old- school or office. When applications, virtual desktops and user data are stored in a data center, it can be delivered to any device in a secure and controlled fashion.

Any company can make these changes with a little planning, work and - yes - flexibility. But you first need your insight and capacity to act before the changes in our offices and businesses are permanent. Do you have a story to share BYO?

AppExpert simple expression ... Use several cases

AppExpert simple expression ... Use several cases -

start with This is an expression? Anyone using NetScaler are familiar with this term, does he? In simple terms, the expression is a logical token that is used in the policies and actions. When we launched the Strategic Infrastructure peak called "AppExpert" Our goal was to make the language of surprisingly powerful expression so that all logic can be defined through expressions. We invented a new language of expression without realizing how useful it will be for various cases of use invisible.

Each expression you define a meaning and value in the context where it is used in particular. An expression can be used to refer to a part of the HTTP request in an action while the same expression as a Boolean can build the rule of a policy. As you start to get involved with the AppExpert infrastructure, you will need to live with :) expressions. While it can be endless discussion on expressions and use, in this blog, we will focus on only one expression that can help solve many use cases.

HTTP.REQ.FULL_HEADER

And

HTTP.RES.FULL_HEADER

focus is on "FULL_HEADER" aspect of this expression. This simple expression allows several use cases that are either not feasible without it or would require extensive configuration to achieve the same results. Let some cases basic use.

length or head size

If you want to control the total size of the HTTP header you expect to receive application or response, you can use the following expression.

HTTP.REQ.FULL_HEADER.LENGTH

The above expression returns the total length of the HTTP request header and you can use methods such as EQ, LT, GT or nE do the calculation that results in the Boolean result of the policy. It will be extremely difficult to calculate the full header length without that term.

Replace header name

Many times you want to do operation on header names as the value . To operate on header names, you should use the expression FULL_HEADER. For example the following expression would return you the "Host" header name in the HTTP request and you can use it in the act of rewriting to replace or modify its contents.

'HTTP.REQ .FULL_HEADER.SUBSTR ( " r nHost")

We use " r n" SUBSTR inside to make sure it corresponds to a header name only. Each head is preceded by " r n" HTTP semantics. There is no direct expression that acts on HTTP header name directly.

multiple changes in a single action

Let's say you know the dangerous headers that should not go to the main server or applications. It is a fairly simple operation and simply delete the header one after another. But if the headers list is long, you need to configure many actions and policies to make this work. With the expression of FULL_HEADER you can remove multiple headers in single action

add rewriting action to remove headers delete_all 'HTTP.REQ.FULL_HEADER' -search regex (re / (iU) (HDR1 |.? HDR2 | Hdr3) :. * r n /)

with this single action, you can remove the headers HDR1, HDR2 and Hdr3 in single attempt. It is simple to increase the number of headers here lead this case to come use.

Header Whitelisting

In the case of previous use if you had a list of known good heads that can be allowed and all rest should be blocked ... it becomes difficult, right? You would have heard about IP blacklisted several times over whitelisting head, but there are some specific use cases where Server / App waiting list headers defined in the HTTP request. This requires us to work on all HTTP headers received and ensure that only the expected headers are allowed to go to servers and rest everything is removed. Here is an action such rewriting

add rewriting whitelist_headers action replace_all 'HTTP.REQ.FULL_HEADER.AFTER_STR ( " r n")' 'TARGET.REGEX_SELECT (re / (iU ) ^ (Host | Accept | date): ... * r n /) ALT "" 'regex -search (re / (U) +: + r n /)

[?

above action replaces the entire HTTP header list with only 3 heads (Host, accept and date) in the expression. It contains a full list and replaces it with these 3 of the list to ensure that no other head passes through the server. This is another one of those cases that can not be achieved without this specific expression because it can be a lot number of user-defined heads that are not generally known.

I'm sure you have started liking this specific expression now :)

AppExpert is full of these useful expressions and tokens that can make our lives easier ...

Get the best of scheduled tasks -

Management Command Center configuration supports running configuration with integrated and custom tasks. integrated tasks are a set of predefined configuration tasks that you can run on one or more managed devices. Whereas the custom tasks are configuration tasks defined by the user you can add in Command Center to perform a defined set of operations on managed devices.

There are two ways to implement these tasks, either by Execute tab or Annex (see Figure 1). Run tab will execute the commands just there and then, while Annex tabwill schedule the task for a later time.

When you implement a task with Run tab , it takes you directly to the Execution Log and allows you to check at that time even if the execution of commands was held successfully. But, when you schedule a job with Schedule tab , you must wait for the time and return the execution logs to ensure that the job was completed successfully or failed.

to meet this need, Command Center facilitates a notification system specifically for Scheduled Tasks .

Command Center fault management system facilitates a very intelligent notification system. The fault management system consists of events, alarms and Syslog.

Trigger Events and alarms are installed that allows the user to set a notification system based on the received traps from managed devices and traps launched by Command Center. Among the traps generated by Command Center, there is a trap set ScheduledTask .

The scheduleTask traps are generated whenever there is a failure to perform scheduled tasks.

As shown in Figure 2 , there are two levels of definition of a trigger. First level is to define a filter and the second level is the definition of an action. When you define a filter, you get to decide the level of parameters that filter SNMP traps received Command Center. This gives you the ability to define filters for your specific needs.

As can be seen from Figure 2 , the parameters are the type of device, traps severity levels, IP address of the unit, objects failure, alarm message, alarm age and the development of this blog Categories .

categories, list the type of traps supported by Command Center. This list of categories, there is a category called scheduleTask. Based on this category, you can trigger a notification by email every time the task was not completed successfully.

Once you select the right type of device, the IP address of the device, failure object with scheduleTask as the category, you just need to add an e-mail notification of action.

With these simple settings, you can schedule your tasks and ensure the execution apt is just in time!

Why do we put together workshops?
* Talking with clients, we realized that many deployments tray once they have reached 0-500 or 1000 workstations or never take off because IT professionals or business owners just not know they need to know to start a project, define requirements, and / or define success
* customers ask us :.

- Where do I start
- What steps will go through my organization
- Who needs to be on the team
- What is the time value
-? Which users do I virtualize first
- Where can I find help
- What is Citrix's commitment to my success

LakeSide FastTrack SysTrack:
collect information such as:
* When your users are entering the work
* what are the popular applications
* How are the resources tax applications underlying (disk, CPU, RAM)
Sample LakeSide FastTrack Report SysTrack
architecture very similar to EdgeSight
SysTrack "master" server requires R2 SP1
Master uses the SQL Express local data (included w / bits of FastTrack)
"Web services" and "VMP" installed on master (requires IIS, .NET, Silverlight)
agents installed on the "child" systems (MSI format)
agents use a Jet database / local access to store data
agents send ~ 100 kb per day Master server via the port 57632
minimum of 2 weeks and 50 children systems are required for planning functions
had to install SP1 R2 (for master server)
We had to install Silverlight (twice actually, because it comes with an outdated version) on my client machine to look at the URL fasttrack
you have to enter your customer number when installing (or it will not let you go) and also last 4 digits of ID at the first use of URL
SysTrack FastTrack has 3 parts - Master Web services and VMP
SysTrack Master specs - dual core or 2 vCPUs, 4GB of RAM, 40 GB hard drive (VMs are fine)
TCP 57632 is the port it uses to communicate with "child systems"
Agent is the MSI format ... can be pushed with SCCM, etc.
SysTrack "Web services" requires IIS, .NET and Silverlight 3.5 or 4.0
VMP is the third and final component to install (Virtual Machine Planner)
Local Access db jet is used to store information locally on child systems
Agent uses less than 1% CPU and 30-50 MB of memory
functions as a device driver or service without the core components
only 100k storage sent the child to master (default encrypted and highly compressed ... and only a "summary")
AppDNA
* get a test at: http: // www .citrix.com / AppDNA
* analyze application compatibility
* imperative in large environments with many applications where you need to test the interoperability of applications and operating systems, especially as you move an application from XP> Win7> 08 etc.
* Automatic packaging application> obtain App-V sequence when it is done
* review what application compatibility issues have been automatically detected and treated, see what applications the candidates for the move
