As the twenty-fifth anniversary of the repression of demonstrations for democracy around the place Tiananmen Beijing fast approaches, great Chinese firewall has tightened its grip on Google. Censorship GreatFire.org watchdog reports that the Chinese government began to target Google Gmail and making them completely inaccessible for users in China over the last week.
The group added that the last time this block was in force was in 2012 and lasted only 12 hours. This time however, the block is in seven days (and counting).
The advocacy group said: "We do not know that the block is a temporary measure around the anniversary or a permanent block. But because the block lasted four days, it is more likely that Google will be severely disrupted and barely usable from now "
When recently asked about the disruption, a spokesman Google said ". We checked a lot and there's nothing wrong on our end. "
own Google transparency report suggests otherwise and shows detailed statistics on the overall traffic with lower levels of activity in China from about Friday, which could indicate a serious amount of disruption.
Google began encrypting by default search results in China sometime in March this year by redirecting all users to the encrypted version of Google automatically. Before Tiananmen anniversary of the Great wall of China began blocking access Google search by disrupting TCP connections to Google, effectively block all encrypted services or not. This new block now includes Google search, images, translate, gmail, Google Hong Kong (the Chinese version of Google) and other specific Google page in the country. Even the chrome default landing page has not escaped this block.
Although there are several methods Google can use to work around censorship they currently choose not too.
